The principal is the same, more air in more air out. Get a Pro Deisgn intake, leave the lid off the box. Get a full header and exhaust, rejet the carb. Try it out and see what ya think. Some people have reported that retarding the exhaust cam one tooth is a free upgrade.

If thats not enough, look for a 500cc big bore kit with even higher compression than the already high stock piston, cams, big valves with heavy springs, get the head ported.

Moddifying a 4 stroke will cost a ton of money when compared to a 2 stroke. Before i got my 700 Raptor, id been riding 2 strokes for years as well. I was shocked when I saw the prices of things.

Are you riding in Glamis or Ocotillo? If its just Ocotillo, im sure the intake\exhaust\rejet will be fine. Go to Glamis, and you will probably want more.

You dont always have to break the bank to amke your 4-stroke faster. Do the free cammod first, and that will give you another couple "free' horsepower. Get a pipe and intake, and jet it. Thus far with those mods, unless you go wild with some crazy exhaust, you should be well under what the shee is going to cost to do the same. I think what people get frustrated with is the internal motor stuff, as there is a lot going on. A piston for the yfz is going to run you almost $200. Cams can get really spendy, as the latest crower gen III is running about $400, for just the intake cam.
I wil very strongly agree that a 4-stroke does cost money to "motor" upgrade. But as far as normal mods, the 4-stroke in my experience is actually cheaper to get going. Especially on my old banshee, there is two of everything! Banshee's can still get expensive to work on too!!!!!!!!

Like I said, those in conjunction with the cammod will get you to about 47-50 horse. The yfz with just an exhuast and jetting will make a shade over 47. The cammod makes an extra 2 horse, but not right at peak, usually you will only see like 1.something more. So now you ahve 48. Then do the fuel customs intake, which replaces the stock air intake boot, along with the filter. That intake makes 2 more horse over a prodesign in the low end, and I thkn he said like 1 more horse on topend over a prodesign. so with the cammod, pipe, specific intake, and the right jetting including the yz dirtbike needle (ncvq) you shoudl be right at about 50 horse give or take 1 horse. If you want more than that you have to start looking at cams and pistons, which tend to get expensive.
My quad was dynoed with the below mods and its putting out mid 50's.
If you want more than that, your going to have to bore it or turbo it or something! Usually the big bores and strokers arnt making that muhc more peak power, but a butt load of bottom and mid!
Good luck!

.............heck, you might make more than that with that new intake. I am still running the prodesign, and running mid 50's!
