DECENT GAINS WITH A TM 45 AND PORTED INTAKE ON A STOCK MOTOR?
#1
I am going to save for a full motor build on my Baja but for now i want just a little more power and i am very close to ordering the Mikuni tm 45 and a HP research ported intake. My question is will i notice quite a difference with a stock motor and if so just how much of a difference will it be.My plan is to install the carb and intake to gain a little more performance out of my Baja for now and then have the internals (PISTON/CAMS/VALVES) done later this year.I have a HMF QS-1 pipe which is really only good for low end and midrange but it is very quiet and i need that for the dunes i ride so that will have to stay for now even though it will be the weak link in the search for more power. If you have installed the tm 45 and intake i would like to hear your results.

yep youll like it, its worth around 5hp. leave snorkle tube on. you might even try the tm48 or the hv48. i know the tm's are a little cheaper.
oh if your around a dyno DO IT. and you could always watch e-----bay for carb and intake. i know in a week there will be a few intakes on there.

A new carburetor will be a night and day difference. It is the only bolt on mod that I felt REALLY woke things up - everything else is just chump change.

I have a similar set-up, you will really like it
Let us know when you have it there are a couple guys floating around here who can certainly help you get it set up right.

I am going to go ahead and order the carb and intake in the morning so i will have some questions soon.SHMEE thanks for the E-BAY idea but i will be ordering from HP Research ,i think they will be good for after purchase information.I am going to stay with a stock bore size with 11:1 compression and cams for sure but will i really need to change to different valves? This will not be a drag quad but my general dune machine so i want low end and midrange gains for the most part.

Wow it will be like mine! I put a TM45 and a ported intake on first and noticed a major change. Then I put in the 11.5 JE I had and HPR sent me the gaskets to correct the compression so I can run the highest pump gas. I also changed my vavle seals like $5ea. You pop them off and push the new ones on. I also put in dual valve springs so in the near future I will put in HR2 cams with ease. Without the cams its already very impressive. I have some work to do yet to dial in the carb.
Hightower is who you want to talk to about the TM45. You better get your thumb throttle spring or mod it like I did.
I would like to see what a lectron 46 would be like yet....hmmm.

Bajax04-I am getting the vortex twist throttle and cable so that should work well with the tm 45.It sound like you are impressed with your ds ,i am hoping mine will perform well also.

I had a HMF pipe/ stock carb was jetted withK&N filter. mine is a 2002 Baja
I then had a TM 45 installed with the match ported intake..........man what a difference!
Put it this way, 2nd gear wheelies were the limit prior to mods, now she will stand up in fourth! You may need to change CDI's if you have not already, you will be hitting that rev limiter much quicker. I went w/ RW CDI
Make sure the pumper is activated and don't forget to do the seat mod (do a search, you will get the info)
One other thing that I feel made a big difference was going to Ron Wood 60% springs. You can make all that power, but you need to transfer it to the ground.........
Good luck with the mods, let us know how it goes.

Hi duneittilludie,
Ya, that was one of the best MOD's I did to my 04 DS. I also completely removed my Air-Box... like I said its a sweet setup.
I am not a good tuner but more of a bolt it up and go guy... so out of the box from RW (with Pumper activated) and ported intake the bike had some flatspots sputtered and kicked back on me a bit. I mean it did run but I opted to go with the Dyno Tuning.
I had the guys over at Alba Dyno tune the bike and like many of the other guys state she runs quite a bit stronger now !
Well what does that mean ...
The beauty of getting a dyno tune is they establish what the current output is both before and after tuning.
I hit just about 51 horse and my torque curve is nice and steady till she falls off at the top end.
The clutch springs are definately reccomended as I started slipping so I installed the 60% stiffer springs.
It was a bit of an investment for all the parts and tuning but now the bike really performs like she should and I am quite happy with the investment.
Good luck... take your time and go slow... do it right the first time....
-See you at the Dunes....
