I picked up a 2500 lb winch at a auction and I'm putting it on my 425 6X6. It didn't come with any wiring. What is the best way to wire it in and what kind of switch do I need to get?

Well what kind of winch is it. Winches can be wired different depending if it needs a solinoid or not.

 

i hope you it for a good price w/out any wiring! just make sure you get the right gauge wires when you do.

 

You can get a cheap wiring and thumb control kit off of ebay. I would try to get 6 gauge wire to keep the winch from overheating as quick.

 

Its a Superwinch. I gave $15 for it.

Should I wire it direct to the battery?

 

You will go from the battery to a relay type pack, and then to winch. The thumb control will control the relay pack.

 

I installed a 3000lb Ramsey on my 2004 Sportsman. Mine came from Ebay for $319.00 delivered complete with winch, wiring, contactor, roller fairlead and handlebar rocker switch. Complete package including all hardware and instuctions. Only the mount is not included.

The power wires from winch to contactor are 6 gauge and the power wires from contactor to battery are also 6 gauge. All wires should have 1/4" eyelet terminations so you can make connections properly. Handlebar rocker switch to contactor wires are just little 20 guage (I think) thin wires because all they do is energize the contactor coil.

I mounted my contactor up front under the nose plastic right to the top of the main front end structural cross member. I like this location because it's out of the way and is not subjected to anywhere near the the sort of wetness/mud/physical abuse than would be the case with the standard Polaris mounting position under the rear fender.

I also got the KFI mount. It's a one-piece design that's much simpler, easier to install, really nice all welded heavy duty and leaves the cable spool open so you can see what you're doing while realing it in. The mount was $48.00 delivered.

Got both the winch and mount off EBay.

I know that some winches use a relay but I cant find that a Superwinchdoes uses one, can anyone tell me? If I dont use a relay is a 20 amp switch large enough? If not what size do I need to get.

 

Most of the smaller superwinches dont hav the solinoid. The 20amp should be good. Just use a heavy duty self centering 2 pole switch.

 

I'd go with the $15.00 thumb switch. It comes with the contactor and wires. The instructions are clear and i'm no electrician.
I got one off ebay last week and it worked out well.
I do suggest the contactor. It keeps the high amps from the battery from going thru the switch.
I tucked two of them under the front of the machine. There is a plastic cowel under the front rack that pops off with a few tabs.
There is a peice of frame that i drilled for mounts then coiled the wires with zip ties.
finally got enough snow to plow.
Ive had wood for a month waiting to try my plow.
Lets see if that gets edited out.
