Default Question about break-in for 06' outlander 400

I just bought an 06' outlander 400. How important is it to get the valves adjusted after the 10 hour break-in. The service manager at the dealer where I bought the outty only mentioned about making sure I changed the oil. But when I went to pick it up, the sales manager said I needed to make sure and bring it in to get the valves adjusted at a cost of $275. And if it is required, should I have to pay for that? I thought I would ask the experts out there. I would sure appreciate any help. Thanks.

Default Question about break-in for 06' outlander 400

In 10 hours I would not worry about it.
I would personally check them after a 100 for sure. I bet even at that they would only pound in a few thou.
Yes you are going to have to pay for it out of your pocket if you have a shop do it. I would adjust them yourself, but I don't know the experiance or the tools you have.

Your break in period is the first 20 miles, this is your best opportunity to get a good break in.

gee, i got mine adjusted for 52.50 +tax on my Polaris, remind me to never buy a brp, i thought they were suppose to adjust thier selfs, my buddy has a quest 2 seater, has over 7.000 miles never been adjusted, sounds like somebody making a lot of money off you guys, ask them how long it takes to do this, then ask how much do they charge an hour for labor,, i'm still in shock, i going to lay down for a while on that one, i think this is the big one martha!!!!!!!!!!

Default Question about break-in for 06' outlander 400

The Quest and Traxters had hydraulic lifters and didn't need adjusting. The Outlanders, however do need adjustment. Get the valves adjusted, definetly don't wait until 100 hours. The recommended break-in is 10 hours. When outlanders come in to our shop for the break-in service, 75% of them have loose valves.

Nightruck, $275 sounds a little high. Are they doing the entire break-in for that or just the valves? We charge around $200 for the entire break-in service and that includes parts, labor and tax.

sorry but the 200$ service charge is still a little high but i guess that would all depend on what you charge per hr on labor. the 400 is a real tuff little bike and they have been around for a while now and are proving themselves to be very worthy.

$80/hr, which is the rate for most shops in the area. Two hours labor = $160, oil filter $15, 3.5 qts can-am oil $20, total $195 befor tax. For $160 labor we adjust valves; change oil/filter; clean air filter; adjust steering alignment; check/top off front and rear diff oil and coolant; grease all zerks; check brakes, cv boots, tire psi, fastener tightness, and lights; test ride and check for anything out of the ordinary.

Yes, I work for a brp and honda dealer. The 400s have been excellent, especially when compared to the old traxters and quests. If there is a problem, brp is fixing it on the next model year. Example, early 400s had problem with front cv joints breaking when a rider is trying to get unstuck and turning the handlebars back and forth full lock. BRP changed how far you can turn the bars just enough so the joints won't break. The only problems we have now is customers choking them too much at start up and fouling plugs. The 400's don't need choke a lot of times even when the engine is cold. That won't be a problem when the 400 goes to EFI, which should be on the '08 models.
