Default should i take the lid off of my airbox?

i am always hearing someone talking about taking the lid off of the airbox on there quad. is this a safe move, or will it damage your atv some how. if it is fine what performace boost can it give me.

Well it's really not going to do much, unless you rejet, and pipe it.

i wonder why everyone is saying that then. cause they havent told me about a pipe or rejetting

If you are racing or something, then it may b eworth the performance gains. If you are just a trailrider, or if you ride in a lot of fine dusty or muddy conditions leave the lid on. Your motor will thank you in the long run. You could also look into some of the aftermarket airbox lids that have K&N or Outerware material over most of the lid. I rode with a Banshee once that had twin K&N's/no airbox. He didn't fare so well once we hit the first creek crossing(whoops!)
