Default 82 ATC200 carb/rough running

well I have just about had it on showing the love to this machine...

I pulled the carb apart and cleaned up everything..(maybe I should rebuild)..

maybe I just don;t know this machine well enough...

the engine runs smoothe up to mid power...then it bogs down...like fuel starving...mid choke all is fine.......(and if I flip the choke to mid, it will rev fine...a little backfire when letting off the gas)...

I've changed the throttle needle setting from full rich to one off lean....air screw is set seemingly correctly according to clymer...

plug is cleaned up and new....

what am I doing wrong?....I just want to leave this little pony in reliable shape....
thanks wise ones

You need to richen it up. It is bad to run engines lean but its ok to run them a little rich. That would be my guess of why mid range its bauging down and why it runs ok with the choke mid way.

Oh and does it have the stock air filter/ and muffler on it?

yes stock air filter and exhaust....I cleaned the air fitler so it is cool...the exhaust is solid but a few holes on the under side of the end of the muffler...

it was running worse when the throttle needle clip setting was at full rich and seemed a little better at leaner (one notch off full lean)...I just don;t know...why chocke half on and runs great?....too cold air temps?...about 20F....BTW I am at 700 feet MSL...

I see I have a small oil leak at the decompression lever attachement

thsi is such a cool nostalgic machine for the family that I want to keep her running...

no once it warms up it should run fine. If you havent yet you should play with that clip to see if you can get it running better. If you already did that then my other guess would me that your main jet is clogged up. If you have torch tip cleaners those work gread for cleaning the jets out. Even though you might have rubbed it out and maybe blown it out the jets can still get clogged with old gas residue and can be hell to get clean.

I was not talking about going leaner i ment maybe richen it up a little. it seems to me like its running to lean since you can put choke half way on and it runs better so maybe if you put the clip up one or two notches that might help.

thanks, but it WAS set at full rich and was runnign worse than when I moved it leaner......leaner seemed better....and my plug was really black.....

maybe I am not understanding choke......choke means less air flow?...richer mixture when choked?....

I am learning....and dog damnit..I will get it

yeah chokeing it cuts off some air flow Half choke cuts off some air flow. full choke cuts off most of the air flow shooting almost nothing but gas in the engine. How many slots does your needle have in it?

try changing your jet size.i believe if you need more gas you should go up in jet size.
