What GPS to buy?
#3
For a basic, no-frills GPS unit, the Garmin eTrex is a good unit. I own one and it works great in the woods we ride in.
I bought it mainly to see how fast my atv's run but it's cool in that it keeps up with hours, time traveling, time stopped, compass, routes, etc...
It's all I need in a GPS and got it at Walmart for 99 dollars.
For a few bucks more you can get a color display, maps, etc....but I don't need that and it will get you back from point B to point A when you learn to use it.
Shop around and find one that has the features you want. Garmin makes some great GPS units.

I would spend up to $200. I just want something that gets good reception in the woods.
I don't know enough about them to know what features are important and that I would get alot of use out
of.
I would like to be able to plug it into my 12v plug on my quad though.
Thanks

i agree with dd2004. the o'l yellow etrex. it's not a mapping unit, but it shows where you and your truck are at. i have one and have used it for years. it lacks some of the stuff the high end gps have, but it is a tool, not a toy. you should be able to get one for around $90. then get the Ram etrex gps mount and it will be right there in front of you. good little unit for the price. i do plan on upgrading someday to a mapping gps, but if i was just starting with gps, i'd to it again. even this basic little unit has enough stuff that i'm not sure i've seen all of it's features.
then if you wanna get a little more into it, get the national geographic Topo! software for your state, and you'll have all kinds of stuff you can do.

Take a look at Garmin's Rinos. I think the 110 is in your price range. The advantage the Rinos have is they will transmit your position to other Rinos using built in FRS and GRMS radios. I bought two Rino 120s after I lost my wife while riding. Now almost all the bikes I ride with have them. I have had my Etrex Vista for over three years and I am very happy with it. I will be buying a Rino 530 soon. You will not regret getting a GPS.

When you decide what gps that you want, you might want to check out ebay. I just bought a Garmin 60cs for $300 delivered, and it lists for $482.
Topo cds are going for about $85 delivered, and list for $116.

Just wanted to say thanks, you have all given alot of great advice, now I have some
idea of what to look for. The retailers basically give the info directly from the manufacturer
and don't give any insight from personal experience or customer feedback.
thanks again, Bob
