Recon Air Filter
#1
I'm looking at replacing the stock air filter on my sons 02 Recon, What one's are best ( White powerfilter, K&N, UNI, NO-TOIL, Twin Air ) and are they worth the money ? And what about cleaning ? Thanks

I would stick with a good foam filter like the uni. They don't cost much and it's just a good idea to have good filter or to just have a spare so while your waiting for one to dry after cleaning you can pop on the other one and still ride. Cleaning a uni filter is the same as cleaning the stock foam filter.

What are you using to clean them ? It looks like if you go with K&N it can get pricey for the cleaner and treatment. I have been using kerosene on the stock one (probably not the best thing)

I have always used air filter cleaner, it comes in a aerosol can. But a lot of people use gas or kerosene. I have been told that it can break down the glue in the filter but I have yet to see that actually happen.

I'd go with a k&n, foam filters are a big mess and time consuming to clean. I had a k&n on my recon and don't have any complaints about it.
And k&n's expensive to clean? No way! It's like $10 for a recharge kit, that is good for at least 8 cleanings and re-oilings.

The k&n recharge kits come with a spray bottle of cleaner, and either a squeeze bottle or aerosol can of oil. First you spray the cleaner all over the filter until it's saturated and let it soak for a few minutes, then you spray it off with a garden hose. Usually you don't have to, but sometimes you have to repeat this to get it clean. Then you just let it air dry, and re-oil it until the entire filter is red again. One of the things that make me feel more comfortable with the k&n filters is that the filter is white, and the oil has a red dye, so you can easily see if you missed a spot. I don't trust foam filters because I never know how much oil to put on, and if I have the entire filter covered with oil.
