AC/Prairie 650
#1
I know that the AC 650 and the Prairie 650 is the same tranny, which is why I am asking everyone this question. Does anyone else constantly go through belts? I have gone through three since my new Dalton clutch kit. I have 27" 589's on it. It burned up on me 2 times in the mudpits when it seemed to come close to getting stuck on me and I stopped to lock in the diff. Once while I was pulling another atv out of a mudpit. Is it something I am doing wrong or is the setup just wrong?
Also, I have been told to maybe pull out one of the shims behind the secondary spring. Has anyone else heard of this or done it? Is this the easy fix or what? And is it true that a perfectly adjusted belt will squeal at an idle? Any other tips for me? Thank you for any other tips or answers that you guys can give me.

First off, im guessing you dont use low gear like you should be. Use low gear when climbing, pulling, mudding, going slow(15 mph or less), etc. Yes, there is a way to tighten up the belt. You need to go to nyroc site. www.atv.dnsalias.com Go to the teck tips section and it tell you how to do this, Isnt very hard to do. Once you tighten up the belt and use low gear when supposed to i balieve youll be set.

yes the squak at idle is ok it's that your belt is on the tight side of spec. listen for squak at takeoff. You shouldn't be going thru belts. I always engage the diffi lock with a little wheel speed first so my belts is already engaged. Also if I start to spin I don't let it just sit and spin because something has to give if the tires grab a bite of something good, first thing I'm thinking is the belt. I would start to drive with your belt in mind and see if you are replacing belts as frequently as you are now.

So it doesn't hurt the atv to have a little wheel speed and reach over and grab the diff lock and flip it on with a slow wheel speed?
Also, I was using low range in the mud and on hills, guess I should use it a little more on the trails, huh?

They are not the same tranny as far as gearing goes, low on the p 650 tops out at around 38 some have reported 41 mph and like 63 in high. The cat in low tops out at around 53 and like 62 in high, I did not believe it til my friend showed me. .I know the cat has 26" stockers and the p650 25 " but I do believe that low gearing on both machines is different.Thats why the dealers stress using low on the cat.My friend hardly ever uses high at least thats what he told me.

That is correct, i never use high gear on my V2. Plus Ive never burnt, or had the belt slip, probably because i leave the atv the way i buy it. If i get new tires, they will be better, but the same size that came with it. My V2 tops at 70mph in high on a straight paved road. I also take good care of it, dont get me wrong, its only 3 months old and i already have 560 miles on it, and i have buried it in mud and snow, but never burnt a belt. They sell them with 26" tires for a reason. If you want to mess with it, you might have to pay a price, and its not the product thats failing, its the consumer who messes with it
