Need a title - How do I get it?
#1
I'm currently trying to sell my dirtbike to buy a quad. The guy wanting to buy the bike is very concerned with the bike coming with a title. From what I've heard, there's no way to title a dirtbike. I didn't get one when I bought it, I got a bill of sale. What can I do? Is there a way to get a title?
Here's some info -

Most new dirt bikes and atv's don't come with a title. They come with a certificate origin. Anyway, if you bought this bike new get a copy of the bill of sale from the dealership to show you legally own it. I you have it registered it would indicate that you legally own it. If the guy is still apprehensive give him the VIN and Engine #'s and let him go to the local PD and check to see if it is stolen.
In most private sales of dirt bikes a simple hand written or typed letter saying you (the owner) sell your (describe the bike with serial #'s) to (the buyer) for $$$.
Pretty simple stuff.

If anything, you can just write him a bill of sale and get it notorized like squeege said.

I've bought 4 quads in the past 6 years all brand new from dealerships. Never got a title to any of them. I've registered them in CT, MA & NH (VT). All you need is a bill of sale. Bills of sale are very common for items such as ATV's, dirt bikes, smaller boats, golf carts, ride on lawn mowers and other items of the sort that don't have titles.
Maybe it works differently in other parts of the country.

You can go to the State DMV with the s/n off the frame and request a title, "BUT" if it comes up in their records as being stolden you will lose the bike and you, yourself will be investagated as either being the thief, or knowing who the thief was, and the bike will be given back to the orginal owner. The best way is to ask a Policeman you can trust and he can run a check of the s/n to make sure its clear.

Every state has it's own process.
For Iowa we have a Bonding process. Takes 4-6 months. You fill out an application. Pictures of the ATV/Bike?snowmobile/boat With bill of sale.
They research it. Check for stolen, any previous titled owners. If so they contact them. If not they contact the bill of sale owner. Once everything checks out they issue a letter saying, ok to title and then you go get the title.
Most states have some similar process. But it starts by going in and trying to title the ATV/Bike and they will point you in the right direction.
Most likely he is worried about it being stolen. I know I am when I buy a non titled ATV. But honestly titles were not a big thing until recent years when registrations were required to ride on public lands and roads.
