The 300ex is a great quad, it is light, has electric start and reverse, is rock solid reliable, and is very easy to ride. My son is 15, weighs about 160, but before he started working out last year, he was around 182, and even raced his a little, and it was a real contender, even against modded Blasters and 350 Warriors/Raptors. With an aftermarket pipe and silencer ( the stocker is really restrictive, very small) some air box mods and filter, jet up a size or 2, and it really wakes up the motor. It should be easy to find parts for, and is a great trail quad. We are heading to Silver Lake in June, and I see no reason it would'nt do well in the dunes, I went there with a friend that had a stock 250x, and it did great, no problems with dunes or climbing hills.

What kind of riding are you going to be doing? If you are going to ride the trails and woods, those atvs do great! The mods 95wolv talked about would make that thing screw and it would beat the raptor 350 easily with just a few of them.
