Default Help me choose a Quad for the wife...

Hey guys. I want to get a quad for my wife but she wants one with an automatic transmission. Can you guys help me pick one out? We are only going to use it for trail riding in the desert.

Does she want a FULLY automatic trans like a Snomobile? Or is she OK with shifting gears with a foot lever but no clutch?

My wife didn't think she ever wanted to shift either. But I taught her how to ride on our old Warrior.

When time came to get something new I expected her to want an auto or at least semi-auto, but she said he hated riding my Father's KFX700 because she likes to shift. So now she's the happy owner of an 06 Raptor350. But it would depend on your wife obviously. My wife is very determined, she never gave up even while stalling the Warrior so many times I worried about the battery and the starter burning out.

If you can get her to shift with her foot in an auto-cluth machine, there are a ton more options like the Suzuki z250, and the Honda 250ex. Both are fairly peppy and handle well enough. But that's where I'd personally start looking.

If she won't buy into shifting at all, I think Polaris might be your only option, or something like the KFX700 but that might be a bit much to handle for a newbie.

I would look at the eiger, I have the manual shift auto clutch. My wife loves it and now wants one of her own.

Suzuki has brought back the 2wd Eiger with auto trans, this year. Same frame, motor, etc. just not 4wd. We almost got one but my wife liked the Ozark alittle better. Smaller size and not as heavy was a better fit for her. The Eiger is a good machine, nice power, smooth ride and simple to use.

I always hate to hear that automatic only thing..........

I can teach a little kid who has never ridden in their life, to shift an autoclutch in a couple of hours! If she insists on an fully automatic, it really limits your selection down to a bunch of utility quads (big and heavy!) that aren't a real good choice for desert riding. You really don't want to go there, it would be a big mistake. LIGHT LITTLE SPORT QUADS that float on top of the soft stuff, are the fun ticket in the desert (unless you are deliberately going out looking for the most terrifying terrain, or are headed to the mountains for snow riding).

The little Honda 250EX is a great little machine! It is autoclutch (but can also be shifted fully manual left hand clutch for beginners to learn on). If you can convince her to ride a fully manual clutch, then that opens up way more choices of absolutely superb machines with great handling and suspension (Honda 400EX, Suzuki Z400).

My 12 year old son rides a 250EX, my 16 year old daughter rides a 400EX, my g/r rides a Z400, and I ride a 450R.

Don't end up with a huge, heavy, misfit clunker!

Dear Mr. FireInside,,, The reason why most men buy ATV's is to get away from the wife, its a place and a good reason to get away from the yelling, screaming, and fighting. Keep her home, tell her you expect a good hot meal and a clean house when you come home from riding your ATV all day.

First Suzuki made 2wd and 4wd Eigers in both auto and 5-speed. Then they dropped the 2wd models. for '06, they brought the 2wd auto back: http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products...6/Default.aspx

For the OP: While it's probably too late for this, you may have more success in finding a second quad that you really like and would like to ride occasionally - THEN find a gal who also likes this quad and marry her.
