raptor sprokets
#1
I was wondering if a 12 tooth front sproket is a good way to get more acceleration out of my raptor for mx or should i go lower. Rear Sproket??? And will i need a new chain or can i just tighten the stock one??

What size tires you running? and whats your current gearing.. with 22" rears 12x42 is pretty good all around on a 660.. with 20's12x40 seems to be pretty decent 12x42 fits in the stock chain and 12 by 40 also fits. i cant remember if i trie 13 42 or not.

believe it or not I ran 12/44 gearing for motocross. it was a little steep. but just dropping to a 12 up front, and keeping the rear stock would be a fair improvement for motocross. I also run 20 inch tires. but now I have bumped my gearing back up to 13 in the front and 42 in the rear. makes it a little more balanced, plus I just put in a stage 1 cam, high compression piston and new LRD pro4 exhaust.
your gearing will depend upon your other mods, i.e. exhaust, filter, tire size. but just dropping a tooth in the front helps out.

Your stock gearing should be 13 in the front right now. I dropped a tooth in the front but, it wasn't for racing. I did it because it seemed like I was downshifting into first too often. I wanted 2nd gear to be more usable in tighter areas. It will make a difference out of the hole though. Makes 2nd gear holeshots a lot easier. It is a cheap part and easy enough to put in. Give it a shot. If you don't like it, switch back.

hey man i got a 2002 660 raptor and i have the same problem you do, i felt like i had to down shift into 1st way to much! when you dropped a tooth in the front did it improve the acceleration alot?? And how much did it take off the top end

I walk away from my buddies stock 660r. It isn't until 5th gear that he starts to gain on me. I couldn't really say what exactly I lost top end. I have that thing pinned so rarely, the smaller front sprocket made sense.
