ATV for son
#1
My boy is about to turn seven and I'm trying to break his PSP addiction. I have about 2 acres for him to learn on but I'm not sure what to get. The local Ganders Mountain carriers Kolpin, Arctic Cat and Bombardier 50's. The prices range from $999 to about $1700. I've ruled out the Raptor since I've read so much about how slow it is and I want something he to grow into. With that said what's the best bang for MY buck? I want safety, quality and performance to be the key factors. I won't say money isn't an issue but I'd rather spend more now than later. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I'm clueless about ATV's.

Hi we use dto have a yam 50 and 80 for my younger bros and to be honest id get the 80 and set the throttle stop lower as saves buying a bigger quad later and he wont be long growing out of a 50 in my book!
Dont know what other manu's specs are there but Yam's are the best here parts are cheep and easy worked on

The only two mini's I care to recommend are the Honda 90 (to big for a 7 year old) and the smaller Suzuki 80 (2-stroke). I would get the 80 and leave it corked up and with appropriate throtle limiting, then when he is older and can handle the power you can increase it for him.
This is a quad he can grow into. Kids will outgrow the really little quads overnight, so if he is big enough for the 80 go that route.

Thank you all for you're feedback. I stopped at a local dealer today and asked about the Suzuki 80. Unfortunately they could not provide much information about the performance of the Suzuki and were trying to push a Yamaha 50 on me. I was wondering what is the top speed for the Suzuki 80 with all the speed limiters removed. I read great things about the quality of the Suzuki but can't find specs on the performance. I'm well aware that this shouldn't be my focus since this will be my son's first ATV but I want to make and educated decision. Also is Kawasaki something I should look into?

Not sure about the top speed, but I am guess'n maybe 30mph...the thing hauls butt, you will need to set the throtle screw in so your kid does'nt get hurt( limits the throttle for just this purpose). It will hual kids 16yrs old around no problem too.

The LT80 is an ideal beginners quad. They have decent low end power and hop-up potential. If racing might be in your son's future, I would look to Dinli, E-ton, Kasea, Polaris, or something similar though. Not because the LT is bad, just that these quads are easier to make competitive.

My brother bought his kid a Polaris 90, it came with a throttle limiter and a plug you can for the igniton box that cut the power in half, it reeally let that kid learn at his pace. As far as being reliably, my nephew can tear up an anvil in a sand box and the little Polaris lasted till he outgrew it.
