Default new owner...needs some questions answerd...

hey guys, new ownder of a 2001 ds650,came piped and jetted and by far the fastest atv ive ever owned. suspension is incredible and throttle response is great to. But ive got some questions since mine didnt have a manual and im not familiar with the ds yet. first thing is i want to change my oil, how much does it take?does it all go into the motor or do i spilt it with the oil tank? second is about the rear suspension...the rear sits kinda low and is slightly soft for my taste, ive already adjusted the screw on the side of the tank but can i crank down the shock to gain some height/stiffness, keep in mind i dont have the tool so a step by step is in order. last thing, for now is that the rear tires are gone and the rims are beaten so they all need replacing. ive owned the itp mudlights on my old kfx but are there any other good mud/trail tires? where can i get them online and where can i get decent rims, not looking for anything fancy, there gonna be beaten up anyways. thanks for the help

Well as far as oil goes, it all goes in the tank, it takes around 3 quarts, you will know when you check it after you change the oil. Look in the whats in your garage post for any parts you may need, there is alot of extras on there. PM the person though that has what you want, do not post wanting to buy. If that fails try ebay. I have bought alot off there. Also there is a place in california that i bought a complete set of itp wheels and holeshot tires shipped to my door for $430.00. I think that place is called inlandatv, they also sell on ebay. Well welcome aboard and good luck. RUSS

It take 3.7 quarts of oil... but I put in a whole gallon every time no problems. Next to adjust ride height loosen the jam nut on the shock collar with a screw driver and hammer... you don't need that stupid tool... I had one and could not get it in ther anyway... have a friend lift up the back of the bike. With your hands turn the whole spring, and it will turn the top spring nut with it. Set it to about 4" of sag. Be sure its not too low or you will burn up your chain roller quick. Check out recreationtires.com for the tires. Good luck, and welcome to the forums... you'll find all the info you will ever need here.

Rocky Mtn ATV is a good place to buy. I just looked and they don't have my tires but I have Black waters and they are great in the mud, snow, pretty much everything I haven't found anything that they don't do good in. I still use paddle for sand but they are good for the rest. Good luck in finding what you like. Nice to have another one of us in here.

Do a search for oil screen! YOU NEED TO CLEAN THIS!!!

If you don't know if it has been done or not, check your valve clearance and adjust.

The only way I adjusted the rear shock was with the two shock nuts. I think you want the sag off the grab-bar to be no more than 6" from when you aren't on it to when you are on it.

'01 have the bypass tube or does it need to be bled before you install the filter? Also, plan on turning the motor over a few times after only 2 quarts of oil or you will overfill your tank before the oil makes it to the crankcase.

the '01 does have the vent tube for self priming of the oil pump - Matt what we are refering to is the small rubber tube that you can see teeing off where the big braided oil line tees into the motor just behind the cylinder. the '00 did not have this, and after draining, or in the event of a rollover riding, the oil pump may starve. there is a bleader/primer screw behind the oil filter for this purpose, but is rarely needed on '01 and later with the vent tube.

there are also two oil filters - the '00 used a short filter, the '01 and later use the long one, be sure the dealer gives you the right one.

I put one full gallon each change also. you poor it all in the tank, but just don't forget than when draining you must drain the tank AND the crankcase - there is always a little in the case that needs drained.

if you go to the links page in my signature there is a link for shock tuning on it.

the red light on your dash can warn of two things - overheated coolant, or lack of oil pressure. if, after you change the oil, the red light does not go out after you start the bike, it may indicate that the pump needs primed using the bleeder screw behind the filter. but as mentioned this is hardly ever needed on models with the vent tube.
