My First ATV

Alright,it's been a long time coming but I finally talked my dad into getting a 4 wheeler.I want something sporty and fast and he wants something that if sometime he needs it,it can be used for utility.I have read on here a little bit and i have heard pretty decent things about the 00-02 Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4,i have looked some up on ebay and they look pretty nice.so i wanted your opinions and if you think it would be ideal for what were looking for.

Stay away from Polaris.
In my opinion , they have reliability issues. Not to start an arguement.
I think you will need to decide between fast and sporty or utility, unless you get one of the big bore ATVs [ Grizzly, Outlander, King Quad, Brute Force, Prairie, etc...] then you will have both the qualitys you seek. The big bores are expensive though.
If you are new to ATVing, I think you will be happy just to have a quad to ride. I don't think your dad wants to go out and get a big bore ATV right off the bat. Be glad he would consider getting one in the first place. You should look at a Rancher, Bruin, or if you want a little bigger, look at an Eiger or Kodiak.
I wouldn't worry about speed if you are new to riding.
Maybe down the road, your dad might enjoy ATVing enough to let you get another quad and you can ride together.

Maybee look at a Yamaha Wolvorine, the Scrambler is a nice machine the only down side is the spark plug is really hard to change on em' (some people have to take the gas tank off just to get to the spark plug).

Before I could make any comment's I would have to ask, How old are you? And just what kind of thing's would your dad be useing it for? With that info it would be A lot easier to nerrow thing's down.

I am 16,almost 17 in a few months.I really am not sure what he would be using it for,i dont think he would use it for really anything because he already has a tractor for that so i wanted this to be something for me that wouldn't be a workhorse and something fun to ride around that would have a decent amount of speed.i guess what attracted me to the scrambler was that it was sporty, fast and had 4x4,so if you guys could help my with some suggestions i would really be greatful.

What is your budget?
If you have to get a 4x4, maybe something like a Big Bear, or Fourman or Rancher. Maybe you can even talk him into a 300ex if you want something sporty, they are quick and nimble AND bullet proof.

Thank you for the advice middleagedcrazy,i would like to get a scrambler but i dont know.I went to a place about 15 mins away from my school to look and new and used atvs and we looked,i saw some really nice ones that were out of my range a bit(realistically 2000-3500 maybe more) but then the guy showed me an 01 400ex and i really liked it,it looked to be in pretty good shape, nice and sporty and all that good stuff,it was 3000.My dad was eyeing a Kodiak while we were there because another guy recommended that one,but i dont know if i really like it.it was a 400 i think or maybe 450.Would something like that be fast or would the weight make it alot slower? Also,im not looking in buying this but i saw a 750 brute force,oh man, that thing was massive,i can say thats the biggest 4 wheeler i have ever seen, too much for me.Anyway back on topic,i want to get somthing that if i go out riding with my friend(who has a Honda CR250 dirtbike) i could keep up with him somewhat and not be eating major dust.

Yeah, you might want to look into a 400ex if you're dad will let you. They are sporty, yet dependable quads. Parts are very easy to come buy for these quads as well.
BTW, I don't care what quad you get, is isn't going to keep up with a CR250, at least not power wise.
