My 2nd ride with my HPR equipped stock bore!!!
#1
I actually did some drag racing at the dunes today and i am impressed.I wont claim that my stock bore Baja is the fastest quad around but for a heavy machine with a stock bore it rips.My first race was against a banshee that was running toomeys and an extended swingarm. He looked liked a decent challenge but after leaving him behind by about 6 full lengths in a 400 to 500 foot uphill race three times i figured i would race the wife on our 690 Raptor and although i would like to be able to say i beat her i was behind but surprisingly by only 1 or 2 lengths which is very good considering how fast my Raptor is.I still have some tweaking to do here and there with gearing, tires and possibly weight shaving but so far this HPR stock bore has exceeded my expectations. My last couple of races were with two of the fastest yfz 450s that i could find and the best i could do was to hang even with them which i was happy with.I will eventually be adding a nitrous system and with that i will have a very fast totally stock looking stock bore that will surprise more than a few.I should add that i am still running the stock swingarm and although i could improve my drag racing with an extended swingarm i will probably keep the stock length because i like being able to loft the front end easily for trails and duning. Finally i can say that i can run even with my 690 Raptor on the flats with my wife on it and that is not an easy thing to do.

Thanks for the update dune, I think I read on a previous post you have the topgun slip on, what are your opinions on this pipe, I am thinking of going down the lectron/topgun/cdi path and maybe the boss noss to top it off I don't want to go inside the motor yet, just need a bit more straight line accelleration, AND HOPEFULLY RELIABILITY!!

raptorgav-You are correct i did have the Top Gun slip on but it was just a litle too loud for the area i ride in so i sold it.If you dont have to worry about decibel levels then the Top Gun is a great pipe for power increases from top to bottom.I have had many pipes on four strokes over the years and the Top Gun gave me better gains than any other that i have ever tried.I had the Lectron 46hv/Top Gun and ported intake and with just those bolt ons i made excellent gains. As far as CDI units go i would say that i am pleased with my Big Gun but i may look into a progammable unit in the future. If you did nothing more than the Lectron 46HV/ported intake/Top Gun pipe/ and a CDI you would be pleased.

Teebone56-If i had went with more compression and a bigger bore i have no doubt that i could out run my 690 but i wanted to stay with the stock bore and i have no regrets. My plan is to install a nitrous system on my Baja so that i will have great reliability with the stock bore build and with just the push of a button have a real drag racer when needed.I did have head porting done so i am sure that helps with the great top end i have now.Unless you are a die hard drag racer i think you would be more than pleased with a good stock bore build like i had done.

IMHO you guys are on the right track for a screaming DS. I don't regret my big bore one bit but I will say this. The lion share of gains I made with my 730 was in the first 5000 rpm. After that I am not sure the gains are tremendous.
The gains I made on the bottom and lower midrange have allowed me to run taller gears and still pick up rpms like crazy. With my stage 3 stock bore, I had plenty of horsepower over 5000 rpm to run the taller gears but I couldn't run them because the bottom end wouldn't pick up quick enough.
I am running 17/40 now and that has made a huge difference on my hook-up out of the hole and has taken 2nd from a granny gear that you shift out of in the first 10 feet of the race to a strong gear with a usable powerband. The 730 helps me to not bog out of the hole with those gears. Guess what else, I don't have to hit 4th anymore on any of our race hills. I am pulling right up to power peak in 3rd at the top of the hills........the trap speed is plenty fast in 3rd with those gears.
Not trying to change your mind. Just what I have learned.............of course this applies to "all motor" applications. If you intend to run NOS, that may be a different scenario

DSNUT-We will probably be at Florence both Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend.I had a great time on my Baja and i did find the (new comp hill)Sunday at Florence and it is a perfect hill for a four stroke to shine. Are you going back this weekend?
