I was riding this morning and as I was going up a hill a puff of smoke came up and the engine just quit. I cant seem to get it started now. I pull the pull cord and it still seems like it compression. (I am not a mechanic so am not sure that actually can tell you anything about compression). When I went to check the oil about 30 minutes later or more the oil just came gushing out.
After the motor stopped it did continue to smoke off of the top of the engine but I could not seem to be able to tell where it was coming from. I am not sure but it seemed to come from an oil spot over a cover at the top of the engine.
Do I have a dead engine?
Is there anything I can try that would tell me where to start looking for the problem?

btw it is a 350 2x4 if that matters with anything.
