400 ex shocks will mount in the Z perfectly and I found are alot softer.... you can find used ones on ebay pretty cheap.

Default o6 z400 suspention question

doesnt the 06 have rezzys on the shocks?if so try to readjust the settings to a softer compression, if the springs are to stiff then loosen them but make sure they are adjusted the same but remember if you loosen the spring tension the bike will sit lower to the ground
and your preload is how high the bike sits with nobody on it. the more you tighten the springs the higher the bike is and the stiffer the suspension
but you dont want them to loose or your shocks wont work properly and you will bottom out the bike and thats no good either
