Default engine knock 700 sportsman

I've got a 2004 700 Sportsman and I'm starting to notice a little bit of a knock coming from the engine. The manual says that this could be the result of improper timing but I was curious to see if anybody had any other ideas? Thanks.

check ur oil, make sure that there is no coolant(antifreeze0 in the oil, had some that the base gaskets leaking and filling the case with coolant. This can cause the lifters to collaps and knock, also seen some that it is jest a bad lifter, and is leaking down causing a knock.
good luck

Thanks for the response. My oil is fine. At least it seems to be. I had noticed a few weeks back that my coolant was low and I thought that maybe it was leaking into the oil. The color and consistency of the oil seems to be right. There is not frothing or anything like that and since i added coolant the level hasn't changed and neither has my oil level. I'll check the lifters.

I had the famous water pump upgrade in 2002 and the motor sounds like a knock every since and I also lose coolant but have never figured out where. Check your hoses to make sure they have not rubbed a small hole where they rub on the frame, that was a big deal at one time.

I did a pressure check on my system and it seems to have a VERY slow leak-found 1 at the overflow can were the hose meets the fitting on bottom (now its got a clamp on it.Also weak rad cap 0.9 bars(stamped on cap) translates to about 13psi so a 12 psi cap should work Polaris wants 25$ for a new cap. Good luck .
