Gold Flakes in oil screen
#1
I have quest 650 with 1200 miles on, seems to run ok, never had oil problem, and oil has been changed on a regular basis. This week I realized there is an oil screen on the bottom of the engine, so I decided to clean it. In doing this I found some gold color flakes in there. Is it possible they are there from engine break in, since I have never cleaned this before now, or do I have a problem that needs fixed? The screen was not pluged, just had noticable flakes in. The drain plug had a few metal hairs on, but no gold flakes.

Clean the screen put it back in they all get some minor metal shavings ,The gold flakes are brass (probably from a bushing)thats why they did'nt stick to the plug they are not magnetic.Clean it(screen) reinstall, new oil and filter, and ride it.

If it is running fine and shifts fine and nothing seems out of the ordinary then I would not be concerned. I agree that you should just clean everything and keep riding. Those flakes are prolly just from normal wear. How much of this was there? If it was minimal than there is nothing to worry about. RUSS

There was only a few, flakes only, no chips or chunks. I hooked up an oil presure gage to it today and at idle there is 50+ pounds and at the point the rev limiter kicks in, there is around 75 - 80psi warm. Seems to run fine, nothing out of ordinay.
