Default synthetic oil question?

Ok I have a 2004 Yamaha Bruin 350 4x4. My dad has a Twin Peaks 700. Would it be ok to switch to synthetic oil? We have always used just plain oil on them, but we werent sure if we could just switch over to using synthetic or not. Thanks for the input.

You could switch to it without any problems. I don't see a reason to though, especially on the bruin. The bruin's technology is from the mid 80's, and these engines can run forever on regular motorcycle/atv oil, so why switch to synthetic? Just my $0.02

Yep,,
Agree with recon.
MUCH more important that you change oil frequently than what sort of oil you pour in..
Stick with the yamalube or whatever you've been pouring in and spend the extra $$ on more gasoline..

I thought with synthetic oil you did not have to change it near as often. They have the new oil out for cars that can go 25,000 miles before an oil change. I was only thinking that if I put synthetic oil in instead of the usual havoline 10W30, I wouldnt have to change the oil as often/ save money on oil and filters.

I don't trust that new oil that they claim protects that long. They oil may keep it's viscocity for 15,000 miles, but will get 5 times the usually carbon and contaminants built up before you change the oil and filter.

Is the bruin an automatic or semi-auto? You shouldn't be using regular automotive oil in any quad with a wet clutch.

Its an auto. We have always changed the oil in our quads with regular motor oil. Is there a problem with doing this?

I think it's fine with autos. With manual clutches and semi-autos it's not good because the clutch is bathed in the oil, and additives in the oil make the clutch slip.

If you are wanting to extend your drain intervals make sure you use a amsoil filter with Amsoil Synthetic 4-Stroke power Sports Oil. You probaly won't see a cost savings with the extended drain on a quad, but will have the piece of mind of having superior wear protection from a synthtic motor oil. I wouldn't recommend using automotive oil in aquad even with auto trans, because oils for motorcycles and quads have addivitives to protect against corrosion. Since motorcycles and quads sit more than cars. If you are interested in Amsoil pm me or check my site Amsoil

Also it 's a myth that if you switch to synthetics you can't switch back to conventional oils. In case you switch, then decide syntethics aren't for you.
