Recon valve adjustment...
#1
How are the valves adjusted on Recon? Mine are clickety. I know how to remove tank, seat, thingy, and all else that is in way. And I know how to make sure it's on the compression stroke, and I know the correct clearance. That's all I know. If you have a service manual, (I don't yet), feel free to consult it, please?

You will be looking in the timing window for the "T" mark. With the valve cover off, watch the valves. You should see the intake valve lift, then the the "T" will appear in the window, then the exhaust valve will lift. Then the next time you see the "T" in the window WITHOUT seeing the intake valve lift, then you are on the right stroke. Watch it a few times to get a feel for it.

I adjusted the valves on my recon and its not rocket science. The valves on the recon seem to always be a littel ticky even if they are set to spec. thats probably just because its a pushrod engine. I bought a new valve cover gasket at a honda dealer, they had to order it and it was like $15 (pretty expensive for a piece of card board!)

Use your descretion on whether or not you need a new seal. Mine came off just fine, but I did have a spare with me just in case. Dont forget to grease the gasket before you put it all back together. I am not that familiar with the Recons, so it may have a rubber gasket in which case put some oil on it. Refer to a service manual for this one.
There will only be one place in which the feeler gauges will go. It is under the spring I think.....dont know exactly without seeing one right now.

Setting the valves is not hard at all. Mine is a '99 and the valve cover gasket is metal and I have used mine about 5 times already with no problem. You will place your .005 guage between the top of the valve and the tip of the rocker arm that rides on top of the valve if you follow me. Just make sure both valves are closed and loosen the lock nut on top and use a flat head screwdriver to tighten the clearance to where it is snug against the guage. When you have it at the desired gap, hold the screwdriver still and tighten the lock nut down. Thats it. Oh yeah, dont overtighten the valve cover bolts either. It probably wont take much to strip them out.
