03 or 04 Raptor

"Narrowed" it down is a good expression in this case! Look at the width of that rear axle. Don't know what Yamaha was thinking, but they made this machine narrrow, tall, and tippy. Might want to think twice???

The dude wants to get a Raptor, and just becuase you dont like them because they are "narrow" means you tell him to look elsewhere?? Look at how many of these machines are out there. Look at how many like them. Look at the aftermarket and the ability to make it less narrow. The raptor is a great machine, some people feel its "tippy" others dont. I guess it all depends on what you are comfortable with.

mjbarr99, I believe the '03 and 04' are the exact same, so I'd go with the better deal if they are both in good condition.

04 had some mild changes like a new one-way assembly that still fails like the previous models. Nothing worth breaking or making a deal on, get whatever you can find for the best price in the right state of tune and condition for you.

Sure you can make one wider, but it will cost you $$$$. For me, that means an axle, a-arms, and shocks minumum. Not worth the trouble, when there are so many other great quads out there. I do love the power of the 660, though.
They made the Raptor 700 wider, so obviously Yamaha is admitting that the previous model's width was a mistake!

Just like everything in the aftermarket...its going to cost some coin. To me the Rappy is comfortable, but then again I've been riding a ute for the past few years, so I'am used to being a little "tippy."
I dont think its Yamaha admitting to a mistake, rather listening to what the consumers had to say, and making those changes to apease the masses. Without the production of the Raptor, where would the class be today? Its a great quad, and now that new and improved quads are out there, its easy to say its not worth it. Just as every quad in history has been out dated, so will the next generation.
When looking to buy used, a raptor is hard to beat.

Not to mention most people who own a Raptor do not race, so it being a little narrow isn't a big deal. My riding crew has a few Rappy's, and every one of them has conquered many obstacles just fine. If someone can't get it done on a Rappy, it's the rider not the bike. I'm guessing Recon has to rely on his bike for lack of ability.
