Default Is my local shop trying to rip me off?

I dropped my '02 DS650 off at the shop, because I was having some problems with the starter. Well, I got a call today, they said the starter clutch was bad? Ok, well they told me it needs a new gasket, starter gear, and spring. Then they dropped the bomb, 600 bucks! No way, I just bought the bike from them less than a month and a half ago. My question is, is this a fair price for these parts/labor? Are they trying to screw me? Thanks -JW

I know that robsperformance.com is one but I am sure there are others.

that's a lot of$ changing the sprag clutch out- it's maybe an hour of labor and they just don't go out that easily- what were the symptoms you were experiencing? what CDI are you running?
has the dealer actually taken the stator cover off the bike? I refuse to use local dealers myself - I can't trust em as far as I can spit, if you are somewhat mechanically inclined we can help you out.

I'm not saying that they are screwing you , they are in business to make money but if funds are tight you can likely pick up the part from some ones garage and do the work yourself.

The only thing steering me away from doing it myself was that certain bolts need certain tourque levels. I don't have a tourque wrench! What do you guys think I should do?

harbor freight sells torque wrenches for around $20, you'll also need the fly wheel puller if you don't have one, depending on where you live you may find a member of this forum that would give you a hand.
