Default 2000 sportsman 500, tranny shift stalling engine

My Sportsman 500 (auto tranny) stalls when I shift into forward or reverse. I can use the atv if I hold a higher throttle setting but when I come to a stop it will stall if I don't catch it with throttle and of course brake. Obviously there is no slip in transmission. Dealer goes, hummmm, better bring it in. I tried adjusting linkage and nothing.
This unit has only 500 kms on it so nothing is worn out and never been abused. Any ideas out there?

Thanks for reply. It starts fine and idles at normal rpm in neutral. When I shift for or aft it stalls because it tries to move immediately. There is zero slippage in transmission when engaged. It wasn't like this when I first bought it and it seems to be getting worse.

Just thought of another problem. The shift lever is very tough to move. You have to hit it firmly to engage. You can feel the tranny gears as it engages and it then loads the engine and stalls if you don't catch it. If you catch it you are moving immediately.

i had the same problem... i can be one of 2 things... you have worn or broken shims in your primary clutch not letting it open all the way, a shim is basically a thin washer that spaces the clutch to open to a certain point

and the second is the bearing that lets the clutch free spin around the center where the belt sits at idle is out

sounds like you have the ole creeping problem from the ebs. i had the same thing in my 02 500 from the belt shrinking. i fixed my problem by putting a stock 700 belt on it. they have top cogs to help cool the belt. try a 700 belt and it may be just t he ticket. while you have your clutch cover off clean and check your clutches a s well.

Thanks stendori, I do have another belt to try. Hope you're right because I hate taking things apart.
