scrambler 500 or 400ex

I am thinking of buying one of these quads but I can not decide I do a little jumping but mostly trail riding in the snow or mud. How much faster is the 400ex and what would you have to do the the scrambler500 to beet it

These are two different types of quads. It would depend on what your looking for. The Scrambler is a 4x4 (on demand) automatic and the the 400ex is a "true" sport bike that has proven it self to be a contender to the Banshee, 250R, and the Raptor (etc). If you plan on riding in snow over 6 inches, heavy mud, and trails the Polaris would be a good match. If you are looking to get some major air from jumps, beating a Banshee(or racing all the time), and also want to have manual shifting - the 400ex would be the one. They are both great bikes. I just bought a 2001 Scrambler 500 a week ago and LOVE it. The machine is a beast. I raced a 2001 300ex and a 1991 lt250r the other day and beat the 300ex by a few+++ bikes, but the lt250r beat me straight out. It was not the rider in the situation against the '91lt250r ( i raced amatuer motorcross for Kawi on a KX125 in the late 80's and early 90's ) it was race bike virus a sport/utility bike. I would not have much to add regarding a Scrambler with mods. Next week I am adding a clutch kid, pipe, and K&N. Anyways hopefully this helps out.

You are comparing 2 very different machines. If your talking about a 4x4 scrambler vs a 400ex I would definatly go with the scrambler based on your riding description. The 4x4 will outdo any 2x4 when it comes to mud or snow. The scrambler is a more all purpose sport machine, whereas the 400ex is built for raceing and jumping.
PS Hopefully you just did not do your homework very well and are not trying to start something here!!!!!!!!

I ride with a 400ex and a 00' scrambler 500. The scrambler has Pipe/clutchkit, and the 400ex has a One tooth higher sprocket, and a wb pipe/silencer. The 400ex beats it pretty good on take off, i think on top they should be about the same. Stock for stock the 400 would PROBABLY win, but wiht a clutch kit pipe/silcer I think the 500 would take out the stock 400ex.

Too bad they don't make the Scrambler4x4 400 two-stroke this year...a few hundred in mods and it will whip a stock 400ex. Jumping or MX racing will never be as sweet... but in the trails, snow and mud it is hard to beat!
Good luck with your choice.

They are two different birds. For mostly trail riding, with a little sport riding/jumping, the Scrambler is the way to go. For mostly sport riding/jumping the 400ex is the way to go. The Scrambler is about the most ideal trail machine out there for people who like to trail ride fast. I'm not sure, but I don't think the 400ex has reverse. Something to consider on the trail, but not a big deal on the track.
