New to the DS 650 need help
#1
Well to make a long story short, Im coming off a 2004 TRX450R that was very well built to a 2005 DS650X. Why some of you are asking. Well Im getting old and dont need a race quad because I just dont run with the big boys anymore. Now I spend most of my time following my 10 year old around on his blaster making sure he is ok. I wanted an all around machine that would also get it in the sand with very little mods (thats why no LTZ/DVX Pred or rappy(no injection for me) etc). I split my ride time between Rec woods and trials/ backyard MX/and sand
Also I have been told you cant ride a DS in the woods because they are to wide. I ran a 2 over 450R in the woods so whats the difference. and by lookign at these posts there are plenty of DS WOODs GUYS
When I test rode this DS I was really impressed with the ride Oh my night and day differnec between it and the old R. So no changes in the future for the suspension except maybe for some ZPS to lower the ride height but that is a long way out.
As far as top speed this thing is great I would say as fast as my R with stock gearing cant go faster then what the sprockets let ya.
What I would like to improve on this thing and be done is the acceleration. Granted it is good but I think it could be better. When I got the machine it was a very clean used unit that had a DJ kit and a White Brother E2 slip on with 13 discs and the open end cap. Loud as hell and I was not impresed. After checking the jetting (the AFR screw which was 4 turns out by the way) and putting the spark arrester end cap (nice and quiet) back on it seems to have better response and a little more low end.
I have read about putting the lectron on them and also the TM45 to realy bring them to life. I have concerns about running the lectron in the woods and have always thought they were a more open drag race carb. the TM 45 I have never been around so i have no clue. I have also read about putting an HPR end cap on the stock exhaust and that will be better than the slip on I have now.
Could someone please dimiss the BS for me and steer me on the right path on a mild hop. Rember accelration is the most important to me and low end grunt. Is it really as simple as an end cap and carb HPR's dyno look nice but I have seen 60 HP machines only make 50 if ya know what I mean. Seems to easy but I dont know anyhting about the DS yet except for it seems to have good top end and rides like a dream.
Thanks

First off, welcome to the Bomb forum. After reading what you just wrote, you will fit in here perfectly. Most in here are older and respectful. Some even know what they are talking about on a BROAD spectrum!
As for getting the DS because you " just dont run with the big boys anymore" That hurts. I believe many feel the DS IS the big boy.
Mine was stock with the HP endcap and 175jet Also the Barnett Dirt Digger heaby duty clutch. That helped the low end a lot. I know what you mean about not having enough low end. Coming out of a turn and holding it down and not getting anything was a drag for sure. If you drop a tooth after doing the above mods, low end issue over
I ran mine in the woods from the day I got it. I ran behind Tim Farr at Gatorback and I swear his TRX was wider. I followed him figuring if he fit, I would too! Turned out he has much bigger thingys between his legs than I do. So don't believe all that wider garbage. Bigger, yes. Heavier, yes. Since you aren't racing anymore, who cares!? Now you'll ride the sofa through the woods!!
See ya!

To put it simply in my experiance Ron Wood 60 percent clutch springs,on dunes endcap, k&n air filter with outerwears in the box made the biggest differance on my 04.
Stage 1 Ron wood on my 03 but the sound keeps me form riding in certain areas. The TM 45 was the biggest surprise the responce was amazing over stock.

stock carb works fie for alot of people on the forums here, try the 175 main jet, richen up the needle setting, that affects your midrange, and get a 15t front sprocket, sprockes are only $20 or so, probably cheaper. the 15t will defenetly help you low end, welcome to the club..............josh.......

Just a comment about the end cap... great power but it is as loud as they come. It will be as loud or louder than your slip on so if db's are a concern you may want to look at something else. Also it is not spark arrested, so if you are riding in an area where spark arrest is needed you will either want to look for an end cap that is spark arrested (I think on-dunes.com has a disked end cap) or a slip on with spark arrest.
As for your acceleration boost... I think you should look at some intake porting. It was one of the best gains I have seen after the pipe of course. If you really want a crab that would be great but I hang with some fast Banshees and 450's (in the dunes, not on the hill) with only a slip on, intake porting, K&N, and jetting. Check out OMR's "Stock Carb Mod's" thread and do what he says and you will be in great shape for very cheap.
Welcome to the forums... you seem very informed as a rider and its good to have another well spoken DS rider around to fend off the savage beasts. Good luck on your mods... if you have any other questions don't hesitate... there are lots of us around here that spend way too much time on the board and don't have anything better to do than write replys that seem to ramble on, and on, and on, and on.... OK I'll shut up now... Welcome again!

Since you are asking i will give my opinion.I would go with a Lectron 46 hv/ported intake/HPR end cap or ODP disced end cap (quieter) and clutch springs.I just got back from a dune ride where we also rode a lot of tight wooded trails and my Lectron performed perfectly for me.The Lectron will give you the acceleration that you are after and the two pipe choices that i mentioned will enhance the low end.I have both the ODP disced end cap and the HPR open end cap and i would say that the HPR open end cap has just a little more top end and the ODP disced end cap has more low end although with all 14 discs the ODP end cap comes close to the top end of the HPR.I wont get into the TM 45 VS the Lectron 46 hv discussion but i will say that for me the Lectron performs well above my expectations. No BS.

Welcome to the cadi of atv's ... the ds might be wide but i ride mine through the trails everytime i go riding so don't believe what other people think they know about us ds riders. Ron Wood sells plenty of stuff to upgrade your ds and along with horsepower research. One of the things that i just recently put on my ds was a magura hydraulic clutch which i love so you might want to check into that.

Something that always surprises me is to hear guys talk about no low end power....?? These Rotax engines have a TON of torque. More than most any out there! I start to think, maybe its just as simple as lack of traction. I mean take that DS on the asphalt and see what happens. These quads are heavy and they will spin the tires rather than use that engergy pushing the quad forward (its heavy). So you may be used to your R distributing that energy better because its not heavy. Try some very agressive tires that will give you that bite your looking for. When my DS was completely stock I drag raced it on asphalt with my buddies Predator and I passed him in second with my front wheels next to his helmet. I really doubt you need to make it faster to get what your looking for, just get it to the ground!
We always want more.............dont get me wrong.

yeah i agree with bajax04, it takes a lot of traction to get this big boy moving. on loose gravel and dirt i cant wheely as easily as my friends 400ex, due to the traction, but get it on hardpack or asphalt and you'll be holding on for dear life, i know i have to sometimes :-)

Thanks for all the replies so far.. I rode today and noticed on thing I thought was interesting. When I would stab the throttle the front end has so much travel It would be coming up as the rear end broke loose kinda explains the lack of acceleration. But mods are going to be in order also. Cant leave it stock that would be no fun.
One other question is I hit a few small jumps four feet or less and heard a loud clanking soundwhen I landed, not the tight swoosh Im used to. When I bought this thing the preload was set very stiff because the guy before me had a small winch on the front. First thing to go when I got home I backed the preload load off to 2 inches of thread showing.
Can anyone tell me what the factory amount of preload is as far as amount of thread showing and what a good starting point for a 200 pound rider would be. This is on an 05 X
I dont think I was bottom the shocks they still felt plush as all get out I even faced a small double on purpose and it soaked every bit of it up.
Thanks
