Default Is there a replacement for a rusty Mule fuel tank?

The fuel tank on my 02 Mule 3010 is already rusting badly. Come to find out that those tanks are notorious rust buckets.

Does anyone know of any place selling a plastic or aluminum replacement tank?

Default Is there a replacement for a rusty Mule fuel tank?

Heres what I did to my 86 klf300...

I left gas in the tank for a few years, forgot about it. THe gas turned rancid and rusted the tank out.

Drain the gas out of the tank and wash it out with water really good.

I took the fuel petcock off and used a strip of thin rubber with a piece of wood and the petcock mounting bolts to compress and seal up the petcock hole to make it watertight.

I have a swimming pool and the chems that go along with it. (BE VERY CAREFUL AND USE EYE PROTECTION) Muratic acid is nasty stuff. For example if you pour it on a driveway it will etch the concrete in a matter of seconds.

I took 1-3 cups of muratic acid and diluted it into a gallon of water. Then took a bunch of change and dumped the change and acid mix into the tank. Shook the heck out of it. Let it sit for about 20 minutes on each side so the whole tank was covered. Dumped it out and rinced it good. Repeated it again then let the tank dry for a little bit..

If you dont get all the rust out try stiffening the acid mix up. I dunno if id go past a 50/50 mix.

To get all the water out i dumped a bottle of rubbing alcohol into the tank and rolled that around. Then dumped that out and used a air compressor to totally dry it out. You could use acetone also.

The inside of the tank came out looking beautiful. I got busy and left the tank sit for a day or two. The surface rust was back, so i did it again. Came out like new.

I then got a produck called "Kreem" you can get it at any bike shop or ebay has it in a kit, i paid around 30 to 40 for the kit. Follow the directions on the kit. What it does it lines your steel tank with a plastic liner. Make sure when you roll the liner around in the tank you roll it really good and leave no spot uncovered.

And also install a inline fuel filter.

It works sweet.. i repainted my tank on the outside.. Looks like new.

Muratic acid was about $8.00. Pool shops would have it. Possibly Lowes..
Kreem liner any bike shop or ebay $30 to 40 bucks.

Hope it helps and works for you.
