Default ndering "how much" of a helmet to buy. I What to look for in an ATV helmet

I will be getting an ATV in a few weeks and was wondering what a good helmet costs. I know the saying, "How much is your head worth". I used to ride extensively many years ago but there have been many new advances in helmets and the prices have changed quite a lot. Can't always use price to judge a helmet anymore.

So what helmets are being worn by ATV riders today? Is there any one thing that you look for when buying a helmet for ATV use? What is the cost of a (how to I say this?) decent helmet, one that will do the job should I need it?

Thanks

I'm running a FOX Tracer I picked up for about $130 or so I want to say, maybe 150 OTD, from Rocky Mountain. Great prices and ship quickly. It's a "dull" look helmet. Not shiny. But they are made that way. VERY compfortable and easily washable insides (toss mine in the washer on gentle and air dry). It's a much better fit for my noggin than the first $60-70 helmet I picked up at a shop.

As long as the helmet is SNELL rated, you can be reasonably sure it will keep your bell unwrung. After that fit is most important. Price is almost irrelevant after fit and rating. you can get a decent helmet for $80 or less, or step it up a bit cashwise and get more features.

I have an AFX FX-9 and my son has a GMAX helmet. pretty paint and cool graphics make a helmet rise in price. a basic Shoei VFX-DT can run you 411.99 and the same helmet in Preston TC-3 graphics can set you back 579.99. So that being said an olive drab FX-9 looks the same as a Preston TC-3 when covered in mud. Also look for a full face and not one that has a removable chin guard. A slight tumble and a face plant could result in loss teeth and a broken jaw. And make sure it is at least DOT approved.

Bought a plain HJC on ebay a while back for under 50 bucks. Then it got stolen.

Just like others have said, get at least a DOT rated, if not a DOT and SNELL rated helmet.

Never buy one off the internet, you should always try a helmet on to make sure it fits. =]
