Testing 2001 Sportsman 90 electrical
#1
My sons 2001 Sportsman 90 was getting harder and harder to start and after starting and running for awhile would sputter and die with anything past 1/2 throttle and now will not start at all.
If anyone could explain to me how to test the coil, CDI and the stator it would be greatly appreciated!
I have pulled the flywheel and the stator and inside of the flywheel is pretty gunk encrusted. I will use some brake cleaner to see if cleaning all that out will help the situation.
Anything else I should test for also?
Thanks!

Search for user spike 99 or search for key word stator here in the kids quad forum. Spike 99 has some great threads with pictures that helped me find a bad staor on my daughter's scarmbler 90.

Well,
I have tested the ignition side of the stator and get a reading on both wires so I assume that my stator at least on the ignition side is ok.
Tested the coil also and it tests good also.
I tested the wire leading to the coil and it has a zero reading.
Maybe could be the CDI?
Need some instructions on how and what to test.
Once again, thanks for any help!

If your problem is no spark then it sounds like you've narrowed it down quite a bit. Just make sure its spark that is the problem not fuel before you start buying replacement parts. If the stator and coil tested good make sure the kill switch is working correctly and I'd even try a new spark plug since it's cheap. Then the CDI is about the only thing left. Try sending a PM to Fastestdad, in other threads he said he has some used CDIs.

kxcrazy, try that stator search, spike really has great info on testing the electrical system on these little quads. His info got my sportsman 90 going. Glad he was able to help you too, 98warrior

Yeah Greg, thanks for pointing me to spike99's posts. They were a great help. Waiting on the stator I ordered now.

Well except for testing the fuel system and the CDI, I have tested all electrical components and everything checks out except for the wire leading to the coil. I do not get a reading here at all.
Is this normal unless the ATV is running or should there be a reading at this wire with the key only turned on?
Anyone know what else I can check for?
Thanks!

Did you say you do or do not have spark? I did not see that anywhere. You say it would run but would spit and sputter after half throttle. Now wont run. Sounds like carb problem, clogged air filter, spark plug etc... I know with my sons 90 if the filter is plugged it wont run and as it gets plugged it loses alot of power and acts the same as you describe. Once I clean the filter it runs like new. Usually when a stator or cdi goes it goes.
