450R Kick start? or electric?
#1
Im looking at new 450R's, a new 06 is $6100 (electric start) but the dealer has a bunch of new 05 Kick start 450's for $5000. How do you guys like the 450 Kick start quads? Seems like a good deal. What are the differences between the 05 and 06's ? Thanks for any info.

The only real differences are the compression and the starting. Obviously the 06 can come with electric start and the 05 does not. I do beleive the 05's compression stock is 10.5:1 and the 06 is 12:1, not 100% sure on that though.
I personally have no problems with my kick start. Even when it's cold and hasn't been started up in a month it rarely takes more than 2 or 3 kicks. Warmed up I can start it by pushing down on the starter with my hand. I would say, get the 05 and spend the $1100 bucks you saved on upgrades. But that's just me.

I have an 04 kicker, and my buddies have two 06 electrics. First off, I like the 06 engine way better. It has a real thrilling hit just off the bottom. I would get an 06 just for the engine, rather than an 04 or 05, no matter what starter it has.
I have no real trouble kicking mine over, as long as I observe the drill. Full choke when cold, and give it a little throtle at the bottom of the stroke. Absolutely do not touch the throtle when hot! Just hold the hot start button, and give it throtle only after it comes to life.

wait till he drops it to the 05 to the $4500 range. the 07s are coming out soon and im sure he doesnt want a 2yr old quad sitting on his floor.
for as kick butt factor yes the 06 has it. but long term durability, i really think time will prove that the 04/05 engine is better for most that buy these things.

One thing to consider is resale, or if the quad will get handed down to another family member who might not be able to handle a kicker????
Absolutely anyone can start an electric, but some folks just will never be able to start a kicker! My old quads get handed down to other family members, when I get a new one. While my girlfriend or my daughter can ride the 450 just fine (and love it!), there is just no way they would ever be able to kick it over.

Thanks for the info, it sounds like the kick starter isnt a big deal, when its handed down it will be to my son. He should be able to start it. He thinks he's ready for a 450 now. I think he needs some time on the 400ex first. Since i'm trail riding the 05 should be plenty fast. I could get by with another 400ex(its time to replace the Blaster),but the 450 is so cool. And at $5000, its not much more than the 05 400ex's they have($4600).

I've taken many rides on both bikes and you won't be dissapointed with the 450r. 400ex's are nice bikes but pretty much the weakest 400 I've been on. The KFX400 and LTZ400 eat the EX alive in my opinion.
