I want to get in to mx racing and i was wondering should i get the 416 kit or just get a 16 front sprocket and 37 back. I dont want to lose that much bottom end but i wnat to gain some top end. Whats the best way to go. Thanks

this past year i have raced mx, about 10 races. if your mx track is small and tight with dirt bike jumps i would say stay stock on back sproket and go to 14 tooth front. cause you need bottom end speed more then top. i hit 4 gear once out of all of my races. i was mainly in 2nd & 3rd, coming out of corners you need to have the bottom so you don't have to down shift. just my observations. good luck

I think you should get your sleeve bored .80 over which is a 416, get a 10:5:1 JE piston and get a GT Thunder cam, it would make your 400 rip. It would cost about $350-$400, and then once you get that, then you can figure out what gearing you need.

You seem to be a bit confused here....

A 16T front and 37T rear will remove torque from and add top speed to your machine (if you currently even have the power to pull those gears).

A typical 416 setup with higher compression will add torque and not affect top speed as long as you can pull 5th gear to it's fullest potential.

For MX, I'm not sure why you seem to be concerned with top speed, I would think a 14T front with the high compression 416 setup would be the hot ticket for you, as in MX you will be needing torque for exiting corners and accelerating before jumps. I can't think of any MX course I've ever been on where I wanted more top speed, but every MX course I've been on I could wish for more torque....

Now, with that said.... We need a little clarification here...

You mention "bottom end" and "top end" - which is far different than top speed (which is what the gearing you mention will potentially increase).

Changing the gearing to the 16Tx37T you mention will increase top speed, but yeild a loss of Top end torque (as well as bottom end and mid range torque).

A 416 high compression setup will increase torque across the board, so you should have more Top end as well as more Bottom end...

If you just want to move the power around some, this can be accomplished with a camshaft swap. You can sacrifice a bit of bottom end torque for top end torque and vice versa. You can also shoot for a broad torque curve which will develop less overall HP or a "Peaky" torque curve which will yeild more peak HP, over a more narrow RPM band....

Thoroughly confused yet???

Hope not. Hope this has actually cleared some stuff up...
