what kind of oil should I put in my 300ex. They say 10w-40 works, but in my manual it says the recommended oil for honda's are sae 30-50 engine oil for the lubrication of my chain. I just want to know what kind of oil i need for my 300ex so i can change it out.

Also what kind of oil filter do I need. thanks

 

honda GN4 10W-40 for the motor and just get the stock air filter

 

10w 40 is what the owners manual says to use. Make sure it does not have moly in it. Most all modern auto oils are not ok. Use a motorcycle or atv specific oil.
The oil filter number is ch6015, and its a common honda filter.

I just ordered the factory Honda service manual and it came with several revision pages to replace existing pages. The revision was the weight of oil... it was 10w40, which is what the owners manual recommends. The new revision changed the recommend weight to 10w30. But, it still showed you could use 10w40 in hotter climates. I haven't seen 10w30 Honda GN4. Do they make it? I'll probably keep using the 10w40 since I'm in southern Florida.

Honda recently changed it's traditional oil chart, and this has caused a lot of confusion. So far, we have had no explanation from Honda regarding the changes. There is some speculation that it caters more to an international market, where there aren't the huge varieties of oil that we have here (????) If I lived in the frozen north, I would run 5W30 in winter and 10W40 in summer. In the milder southern states, I would run 10W40 in winter and 15 or 20W50 during the very hot summers.

There are lots of post in here about what oil types are best. There is old fashion basic petroleum, and three different types of "synthetics". I suggest that you do a search and read a bunch of them, and study and educate youself about oils. honda doesnt make a 10w-30, and only the semi synthetics in honda come with or without moly, so if you go semi get the gold bottle without moly. do not use car oil. i use 10w-40 amsoil in spring-fall, and when it gets colder i use the 0W-40, but it depends on where you live. i believe the filter for the 300ex is the HM5, just like the 400ex. i could be wrong though
