kfx400 recall, How do i tell if its been fixed?
#1
Like the topic says, i got an 06 kfx400 and the sales guy said that he didnt know about the recall and the suzuki 450 had a problem yada yada. So i printed up the recall and took it in and he said it would have to be fixed before he could sell the bike so he thinks its already done. Thanks Jordan

Good question...
To be honest I would probably take it off and look for myself.....
I changed mine to aluminum as soon as I heard about the problem. For what it cost me, and the effort involved in changing it over it was well worth the peace of mind to know it's done forever.
From what I've heard the 2006 fix involves a coolant change and not an metal change. I ran into a guy on the trail with a 2006 and he said they told him it was already fixed too, but his cover was magnesium so I guess by fixed they meant flushed and refilled with better coolant....

I'd say it's safe to say if you take your clutch cover off and don't see corrosion, it's beed fixed. I took my cover off after only having it for 6 months and it was probably 70% blocked. I cleaned it out, then Kawi issued the recall, and I had it done. The mechanic said it was pretty corroded then, too - that was less than 2 months after I cleaned it myself.

Just got the recall on mine last week. From what the dealer told me, a recall notice won't go out until the unit is sold. I guess he was right.
You should be able to tell if the warranty was done by checking the VIN # with Kawasaki. If it has been done, they should have a record of it.

I called the dealer to asked about my warranty and he said the z's were fixed and he just figured out that my kfx was not. So i can get my first service for free. He aslo said thats theres no rush, his tech said that the problem starts acting up about a year later. So if i cant get it in right away no problem. Im going to run two-three tanks of fuel for break in and then take it in. Will i be ok?

jray,
I can tell you with confidence that in a year and that passage will be almost closed - if not completely. If you run it for a couple tanks, you'll be ok. It doesn't take much time for the scale to build up in there and restrict the water passage.

just an fyi - here are pics of mine when i opened it after only having it for 5 mos...
before cleaning
after cleaning
It was a leftover '05 (bought in Oct. '05), so the antifreeze was reacting since the bike was built. I haven't checked to see the build date.
But - when I had the recall done just two months after I cleaned it (second pic), the mechanic said it was a lot of scale in there.
Just don't let it go too long.
