Default CAM QUESTIONS - guys who've tried it all come in . . .

Ok so I know that there are SEVERAL different cam profiles out there from several different builders and/or shops. I'd like to get some input from any of you that have run more than one set of cams on the same setup/configuration or have seen various cam types and grinds on the dyno. So far there is an overwhelming amount of positive feedback on the both the HR4 & HR3 cams from HPR, second there is a good bit of positive feedback on the Woods racing A1/A2 and then lastly probly the Web 109's. Does anyone have comparison's to offer or know of any documentation of back to back comparisons or at least a comparison where the same setup was used with only the cams being changed?

I'm looking for cams that will compliment the 14.1 HPR piston and the 48mm Lectron from HPR. I'd like to have them really shine at the drags as well as up the hill since this is what I'll be doing most. I figure any cams that will work well for the hill shoot will be fine for duning as much of the qualities are similar. What are your thoughts?

The onlu cams I have seen in action or have experience with are the Web 109's, they would do very well on the flat ground but I remember them not doing so well at all on the hill. The bike would lose badly on the hill to bikes it had destroyed earlier in the day on the flat drags.........

Lets here your experiences/thoughts/opinions I especially would like to hear from any of you that have been around long enough to have tried an option or two or at least know first hand what the characteristics of the cams are. So far I'm leaning towards the HR4's.

Thanks in advance!
Dave

The 109's work well with matched components. Talk with Mario, he has a good setup for them.
The A1/A1 match is a very high reving cam, that produces ok hp with matched components.
The HPR 3's are a fantastic dune/drag cam.
The HPR 4's are good for top end power. The are a little more sluggish on the bottom than the threes.
The HPR 5's are great for top end power. They are very sluggish down low.

High compression will hide an ok cam selection, so keep that in mind. A good cam with high compression will produce great results.

These are my expericences with these cams.

Default CAM QUESTIONS - guys who've tried it all come in . . .

I've had them all, installed them all, raced them all, trailed them all.

Here is a brief account.

RWR 110's
RWR 109's
RWR 110 intake and stock exhaust
RWR 109 Intake and 110 exhaust
A1/A2
HPR 3
HPR 4
HPR 5

I think that's it..... who knows!

The 110's are pretty much worthless for anything else but trail riding. No run-out, and not much different than stock. I think the money would be better spent somewhere else.

The 109's are better, but lack on the top end and were peaky. After the peak, they tended to fall off the side of the mountain.

The combo's that I tried from RWR work well for torque but not real well for racing/run-out. Pretty good for cramped desert cams.

The A1/A2 were nice and responded well to many different situations. I would consider those to be very close to the HPR3's and somewhat similar on the the HPR4 low end characteristics. Not as much bottom end grunt as the 3's but somewhere between both.

The 4's have been a very nice cam and have proven themselve to be very good on racing, hills drags and straight-out hauling A$$. Mine to be specific
After all the cams that I've run, these are currently in my bike.

I think if I were to be running hills and doing a lot of line-ups (and I was a regular sized human being), I'd probably go with the 5's from HPR. And the lighter the bike and rider, the better the 5's will be. Less power to be made on the bottom, but they make power at the top end like no other. All that said, head work will make those cams work even better. To put 5's on a stock top end... I think it would be a waste. The head will not flow what the cams have the potential to do. HPR guys might have a different take.

Knowing what type of riding you are going to be concentrating on is the key to your cam choice.

If someone out there has another cam variation that they would like me to try.... send them on... I'll do anything once!

I always chime in on these types of threads. I have 2 2001 DS650s with the same setup. Same CDI with 14/1 pistons and same carb. One has 109s and one with the HPR 3s and there is a difference. The HPR cams will walk on the 109s in the drags and on the hill. Thats the only difference in the 2 quads. I have no experience with the Wood cams but I will only run the HPR 3s. Thats just from my own experience. Pami also has some really nice cams Ive heard and the Bomb is the man on Pami stuff

Jed, what are you running now?

If I had to guess. I'd say A1/A2.... how close am I?

Some good insight and I'm glad to see it is from some who have ran the different cams that there are. Kinda' looking more and more like the HPR4's are a pretty choice set of cams!

Keep it coming guys any one off / "rebel" grinds out there? lol

Mike, a A1 combo would have been a closer guess. We have HPR 4's in Jeremey's bike, and 5's in mine. I ran 5's with a huge amount of duration last year in my stock head with great results. We took some duration out when I went to this head, just didnt need it.

I think with 14-1, the 5's would rock. But with my 12-1, they are real sluggish on the bottom. But when the bottle gets turned on, oooohhhh boy, hold on!

I knew that you had to have something like that, due to the amount of rpm your are turning. All those runs this last weekend and I only saw the bike go up the hill twice. Guess that's the LORD'S way of telling be to stay back and DON'T go get you some.
