DS oil change
#1
Did the first oil change, and I dont think I did something right. The manual says it should take 3.1 quarts to refill the bike and it only took 1 1/2. I had it level, pulled the plug and left it open for a few minutes, opened the oil filter and it leaked a little, cleaned it up and replaced the filter. Put filter cover back on, replaced the oil plug and tryed to refill. I even ran the motor a minute thinking the oil needed to be drawn into the filter housing. This didnt change anything. What did I miss?
Also, when I picked up the oil pan it was dumping into, it doesnt feel like 3 quarts to me. Is their a bleeding that I missed?

you know where the dipstick is correct well that is part of the resivior if you look up under the front plastics you will see a black tank and on the bottom is a fitting that you loosen and the oil from the resi will come out.

Yup... two drain plugs... one on the oil tank, and one on the case.... watch out for that tank... nice and messy. No amount of preperation will make for a smooth first time through so I'll let you figure out on you own how lame draining the tank is on your own. Just get a couple rolls of paper towls... (the bigger the mess you make the less retarded I feel for the amount of oil I've spilled doing oil changes) Good luck!

It will always be messy doing oil changes on the DS, but instead of draining the tank under the headlight I pull the supply hose off that is right behind the cylinder. I can usually then drain the tank with out making to much of a mess.

I use a long funnel drop it through the a arms and into a liquid detergent bottle no runs ...no drips ...no errors...... don't forget to take the hose off the left side of the tank to clean the screen.

Same here just drain the case on the bottom of the motor, then take the filter out. Then I also use a funnel with a long neck and slide it in between the Aarm and put a pan under it. After that unscrew the fitting that the hose came off of and clean that screen. Use some pipe tape and put it back on and put on hose, the plug and put in a new filter. Mine hold one gallon with a new filter. Ive always used one jug and it comes on the dip stick to the proper level.
