I am looking to buy an extra quad to be a "friend" bike. I am leaning to buying a used 400EX or LTZ400. Anyone have any thoughts on which is a better buy...Honda or Suzuki.

I prefer the EX for trails. The engine will lug down, and doesn't mind being ridden slowly.

I would pick the Z for more open, faster riding.

Well, if its a friend bike...first thing i would look for is price whatever costs the least which will prob be the ex. For everything i think the Zis better...liquied cooling, more power, better handling, more updated, better suspension etc etc its just more updated than the EX is.

Since it's a "friend" bike, I'd say the ex. Just a lot less goes wrong with them. Not quite as tunable as the z, but both are still very capable quads. The ex's for the most part have been bullet proof, and if you're not sure who's gonna be riding it how, that's the better choice.

When you say used, what year? The 03 z's had some frame issues. If the frame has been gusseted, it will be fine, but if not, you may (or may not) have some troubles.

If it's a friend quad, then I say the EX for simplicity and price.

Scoot, there were no Z's before '03.

Hence the frame problem.

Like everyone else is syaing, I would go with the EX on this one because of the price. But if your loaded and dont really care, I think the z400 is much better all around than the EX.

I didn't notice that you lived in So. Calif. We have mostly more open country here, with precious little single track. And if you ever ride dunes, more horsepower is a must. So...... Z400.
