I'm looking to buy my 8 year old son his first quad. He's ridden an 80cc and the size is fine. I found a 2003 Polaris Predator 90 and a 2005 Eton Viper 90R at a good price and wanted to get an opinion on these quads from someone who's owned it. Are they reliable or should I consider another model?

Both are good quads, if you are going to run in alot of water I would lean torward a Honda 90 4 stroke though changing out a stator sucks and its expensive..if not I would go with the Eton.

I'm having lots of trouble with my 05 90r. Other members suggest it's electrical. I've replaced the cdi and that helped for a while but it's gone crazy again. Possibly a bad switch or something going to ground is affecting the cdi's performance. At any rate, when it does run it runs great. If you're buying used you may not have this option but I would suggest the standard 90 with no reverse. Electrically it's no where near as complicated.

Thanks for the input. I've been hearing the Eton 90R has been plagued with electrical problems. Probably why not too many kids quads have reverse.

We own a 2005 Eton Viper 90 and it is in shop right now, and after it is fixed, a for sale sign is probably going on it. The stator was shorted out when ridden through some heavy water. The first shop went through it and verified the stator was out, but also with the engine coil. The voltage regulator was also MISSING. So when they stator burned up and that regulator wasnt on there to control the voltage, it in turn burned up the headlights. What is the point of having an atv you cant get wet??? I can understand deep water to float one, but whats the point of even making one you cant get wet????? I think the original owners (we are the second) must have removed that regulator when they installed the headlights, as they do not come standard, which I think they should. Not to mention I cant believe the manufacturers only puts a 6 month warranty! Who wants to pay $2000 for a piece of equipment to have only 6 months coverage? Not to mention, that around here, trying to call to order parts from atv dealers, out of the 6 places I called, only 2 people knew what an Eton even was!!! I would stick with a more popular brand.

Even thou the 90R does have its electrical gremlins, I would probly still recomend it. But I would also consider jumping up to the yukon/viper 150. Not much diference in price, and I think the 150 is a better machine. I love the shifter setup on the 90R. But that is just one set of Electrical Gremlins to get around since the 90R is a electronic shift, and the 150 is a manual shift. Turn on the throttle limiter for your son, and it will give him and you a couple more years of fun.

This coming from someone that is having nothing but problems out of my 150. But even the dealer, and ETON are stumped on the problem with my 150. I think they have finally gotten to the point to replace the tranny assembly and maybe it will fix the problem.
