shifter hard to shift sometimes

shifter hard to shift sometimes
My shifter is hard to shift sometimes.I have to move the bike a bit then it will shift..(it's not the idle)..It's worse coming out of low..
I got stuck in a mud hole today and couldn't get it in to reverse..We were going to use the wench .. then it finally shifted and I was able to back out.
Do you think it needs adjusting or what ?
