#1
I just tried to start My Honda 400Ex and it sounds like it wants to start but just won't I can hear the starter kicking over it sounds like the gas isn't getting to the engine. Any suggestions?

I've already done that it, I put more gas it in and I tried to pop the clutch and it still didn't start. it sounds like it's not getting gas to start. I was curious if it was the starter but if it was the starter it would have started when I poped the clutch. When I was putting the clutch in and giving it gas it so close to starting but it doesn't anything I should check or adjust to see if there might be a problem. Should I check to see if there is a clog in the carbs?

Its posible the carb has a plugged jet. Try having someone pull it to start it, and use 1/4 throttle to get it going. Just have the key on, 4th gear, clutch in, and have someone tow you with tow strap, at about 10mph. When it gets up to speed, just release the clutch normally, and give it 1/4 throttle. When it fires up, be preparred to pull the clutch in, so you dont ram the tow vehicle. If it wants to start at 1/4 throttle, but wont idle, then suspect a plugged pilot jet.
If it just eventually starts, and then runs ok...check the valve clearance. As the intake valve tightens up...the compression drops, and it first shows up as hard starting.

I have a similar problem. When I try to start the engine when its cold, it won't start. How much choke should I use when starting? Can someone explain the process of starting it. Thanks

When you park the quad, and it wont be started for a few days, turn the gas to off, and run the motor til it dies. This leaves the float bowl empty. When it comes time to start it...turn the gas valve to on, wait a half minute for the float bowl to refill with gas. Then go full choke, and spin it over.
Dont over do the throttle ...this carb has an accerator pump, and the motor can easily flood out.

...and put a new plug in it while you have it out. Make sure you have spark... with the plug out, connect the plug wire and hold the metal base of the plug against the cylinder and hit the start button. You should see the plug sparking. If you have fuel and fire and it still doesn't start, I would check the compression next.
