1982 185 3-wheeler - still no spark
#1
No spark at all. tried another electronic ignition box and pulse generator pickup from a running 185. Still no spark..on my exciter coil(behind the magneto) checked dead--no ohms when checking through the yellow and green wires that come from the coil......I installed another one that checked good by checking the same way..still no spark..Nw what? Main coil?

Have you disconnected all of the kill switch wires. How about the gape between the pick up coil and rotor? Is there a bunch of red dust when you took off the cover for the pulse genator?

The guy who I got it from said he had eliminated the kill switch as being the problem but I will check it next. As far as the Gap between the Pickup coil and rotor, I have not had a gauge between it but it appears that there is no adjustment. There was no red dust inside the cover.

That's right there is no adjustment for the gap, but what happens is that the cam wears into the head and the gape gets to be too big and then there is no spark. I have taken the pickup coil off and used a dermial and made it adustable.

A friend of mine had this problem on a 93' polaris sportsman 500 he let 2 or 3 people that didn't know anything about quad's work on it, they torn it apart trying to find out what was wrong with it ! He spent 500.00 to 600.00 replacing part's before calling me to take a look at it. I took the coil off and took it to my local ac dealer, the coil checked out bad, but they removed the spark plug wire from the coil and rechecked the coil it was good ; then she checked the spark plug wire it was bad ! She sold me a new plud wire for 7 dollar's and a new plug for 3.00 i then put it back together and it fired right up ! I would either check it myself or take it to a trusted dealer or machanic and let them check it out...................williebee

Williebee, looks like you put me on top of the problem. I get continuity through the plug wire but I cannot get continuity through the sparkplug exbow connector...Don't look like the "elbpw connector" would be made any special way inside but I surew can't get any connection through it at all and ;ppls ;ole I'd have to demolish it to look inside..Dark and wet outside tonight so I plan to re-install my stator primary coil and charging coil tomorrow evening with a new wire and spark plug. Sure hope that is it.. Thanks a bunch. I'll let you know how it shakes out..

I have a 81 185s and had the same problem. It's the stator coil beneath the flywheel. They're notorius for this problem $14.95 for the coil and another $14.95 for the flywheel puller.......
