I just baought a used 2005 ds650x. Runs awesome. But on further inspection, found the cylinder has small paint bubbles on it, and one of the wires going past the cylinder had slightly melted to the cylinder... Quad runs perfect doesnt smoke, tons of power, anyone else have issues with the cylinder getting really hot ...

Also,the guy didnt have the owners manual,,, how the heck do I check, and change the oil....

OOOps,ok I figured out the checking oil thing. I feel a little stupid.. My last quad was a 400ex. Wasnt this complicated....
But stil wondering about the overheating thing.

The dipstick is in a weird place... my ppl give me a funny look when i check the oil.

 

make sure when you go to change the oil drain the resivior tank first which is the tank under the light and clean the screen in it...also change the oil that is in the engine and the oil filter...how exactly is the quad overheating the engine is always hot and the wires will burn if they are in the way take them and wire tie them out of the way the bubbles are problably from the plastic coverings from the wires melted on the engine...if you want to keep it cooler get engine ice which is a great antifreeze and you can get it from rockymountianatv.com

 

First oil change huh? Get ready for a fun filled after noon. Here is what you will need:

-12 pack of paper towels
-1 bag of kitty litter (you WILL spill oil all over your garage)
-rack of beer
-gallon of oil
-oil filter
-big funnel with a long tube
-arsenal of your best explitaves
-1 meat headed buddy to tell you your not doing it right
-1 meat headed buddy to laugh when you spill (you will)

When you start the oil change you will see where everything comes in.

Yea, they are correct it can be a mess to change. Also get ready for the $13.00 oil filter. The only other thing I can offer, which may be two fold is as follows: When you take out the oil filter there is a bleader valve that you need to bleed as well. This can cause the red light indicator to come on.. This is in my opinion a bad design as the oil light and temp light are the same light, different sending units, but using the same light.

 

That was fixed after '01... what year are you on.... 4 years on my '02 and I've never had to bleed, although I know some on here who have. Its mostly for air locked oil passages experienced after a rollover or similar. Read your manual... its says you only have to bleed if the red light does not go off after you start it up. Basically I check that the red light is on before startup and that it goes off not more than 4 or 5 seconds after startup. The design could be better I guess, but it has been ok for me.

 

I wire tied the electrical lines away from the motor, everything looks good now....
I used to have a 400ex,, man this machine kills the ex.....
I'm going to attempt the oil change soon, thanks for all the advice....
