Hi all, great group....
Ok here goes got an pld 70cc model, new exhaust/air filter/plug and now carb, the reason for the new carb is it was displaying the classic flooding & poor running, anyway got a brand new one (anyone needs one give me a shout) plonked it on and nothing, it won't start, the only way to get a slight run is to drop some fuel in the plug hole, i know this sounds like a carb issue, but i'm lothed to take it appart as it feels a bit like i'm chasing my tail, the fuel seems to be getting to the carb & there is a strong spark... am I missing something obvious here???

your float is most likely stuck in the up position, not allowing fuel into the bowl. Take a can of carb cleaner and shoot it into one of the vent holes coming out the side of the carb if it has one, or take it apart and fix the problem. The previous problem was proably just the float set too low and too much fuel was getting into the carb and flooding the motor

thanks very much, I think I may of been thrown a curve ball as It is a brand new carb, so thought it unlikely to do the same as the old one!!?? whats your thoughts?

OK brainiacs, with carb cleaner squirted in it will start, but is difficult to rev through... then just dies.... any ideas?

Do you have an exhaust leak? My son's TRX 70 did the same thing until I fixxed a bad exhaust leak. Now it starts by the 2nd pull and idles and runs great. Back pressure is a wonderful thing.

good thought! because, I fitted a new exhaust... it doesnt seem to be blowing anywhere, but very interesting.
The carb checks out and seems to be ok, I was kinda moving on to the valves and see what disapointment I can experience there,

That is exactly what I did put a new cobra exhaust on the bike and had to actually pull the jug and weld in some more material where it appears a piece broke off at the bottom(casting was actually thin there) and remachined it and that took care of all my problems. Good luck.

 

well I never... that's what happened here, bits fell off when I was replacing the old one, so I just stuffed it full of gun gum, but guess what no change... this is getting annoying to say the least!

Kind of new to the ATV thing got out about 20 years ago
Back about 2 years ago Bit by the 3 wheel bug last year at the Dunes

I Picked up a 82 Honda 70 ATC a couple weeks ago
It was having the same issue good spark but ran really rich
What I found was the Pionts were not opening enough only about .003"
Should have been .012 to .016"
This will also set the ignition timing on a 70
I also found an OHM meter works good for static checking the timing but the audible will not cutoff when points open just makes funny sound kind of cuts for just split second
Made major difference in engine running
Put fresh carb kit in as found jets had been drilled out
Little thing Fast

is there rust in the fuel tank?a tiny piece could have made it's way to the carb and plugged something .
