Default 1999 Scrambler 500 Ignition problems?! first 4 wheeler-first post

Hey everyone i need some help with my new toy! i bought it off a buddy of mine that i grew up with and he was ready to get rid of it. he has had a few problems with it that have kept it from running and ending up in my hands. first off i took the carb off looked in the bowl no sign of anything out of the ordinary. so i put the bowl back on and the carb on the motor. next i checked to see what kind of spark i was getting. so i pulled the boot off the plug put a different plug in the boot and grounded it to the frame and i get one spark from the plug. I fire the engine and it sparks once and then doesnt spark the rest of the time the engine is turning over. So i i tried a cdi box off a 2000 but it didnt have the green wire that the 1999 does so i have no idea what it is for. next i took the pull start cover and checked the spacing from the flywheel to the magneto and it was a lil far so i adjusted that to maybe get a closer spark. so what now another cdi box for a 1999 or something.

so i guess my question is do i need another cdi box for the 1999 that has the green wire?
also does anyone know what the green wire is for ?

I dont have a clue what you need but if you and your Scrambler are in Dayton OH you are welcome to swap parts off my Scrambler. It's a 99 500. Once you get it figured out just put my parts back on and either look on ebay or the local dealer for the parts you need. Welcome to the forum.

thanks for the offer lslubecki unfortunatly its like a 4 hour trip for me to get to you, and with gas the way it is i dont think ill be makin it. thanks tho

I started thinking more about it and thought that because im getting a spark that means that the coil is good because it is getting a order to fire but only once. so it is doing its job. now im beinging to think it is more about the cdi box. or possibly a weak stator. does anyone know how to test a stator on these? thats all electronically what i think can be possibly wrong with it unless i am totally missing something. i have a buddy of mine that is a tech im hoping to get him to look at it maybe tommorrow. please let me know if anyone has any ideas. thanks

well this is what happened. I had my buddy come down and bring is diagonostic equipment from work. we checked the stator and everything checked out good. then the service manual said to check wiring and grounds. so we pulled the black wire off the cdi box. this wire is what controls shut off switches. if pulled it bypasses all switches and will start no matter if a switch is thrown or not. so we did that and vola! it sparked like a dream! so now we had to find the problem. we jiggled wires and switches and ended up somehow getting it to work! so i putt everything back on the next night and fired it up sounds great! but now a new problem exists. i give it full throttle and it acts like its at half. i have no thumb throttle so i know its not a mechanical because im pulling the cable by hand. I think it may be the rev box. i unplugged the rev box of all connections and it acted the same. i figured it would act different or just not run.

has anyone else tried this? if so what happened?
thanks for the help let me know almost there!!

I'd make sure that the spark plug is ok, then look to the spark plug boot, then to the spark plug wire, then to the coil, you get my drift? Just sounds like something still ain't right with the ignition. Another thing to look into, have the valves ever been adjusted? If not, be sure to get that done...
Also, the throttle electrics (ETC) have been bypassed or something? It's designed to shut the engine off if the cable ever sticks after the thumb throttle is released. Be sure that the ETC system is functioning normally so far as relating to your problem...you're pulling on the cable itself then to get the engine to rev off idle? Maybe you're not getting the cable to open the carb to full throttle with your current method....
