You should use low in the mud, pulling heavy loads, carrying heavy loads, or very steep hills. But it sounds like you did fine. If you pull too much you will burn the belt up.

I use low on my Grizzly in the following conditions:

*Towing regardless of weight. Saves a little wear on the belt.
*Long, steep hill climbs. Especially when I'm in a line with other riders.
*Plowing
*Descending steep hills. Results in better engine braking. I also use 4-wheel drive when engine braking.
*Deep mud or high water

I would think low range should be used to pull any of the overweight quads out of the mud....such as polaris, A/C, Bomb, ect...ect

We had a few 660s before getting the 700 Grizz. I only used low range when climbing a hill that was steep enough to scare me into using low range. Yamaha belt drives don't require low range as much as the other brands. The 700 is even better than the 660s were, I think you could do just about anything in high range with the 700. Common sense, however, may prompt you to shift into low for the scariest of trail challenges, LOL.
