the reeds are worn replace them and u will be fine, i have had two of them and every time they did the same thing that ur talking about it was the reeds and nothing else, buy a set of boysen power reed they make a heck of a difference , but when u put them in u might have to adjust ur mid range throttle needle

they dont start good with bad reeds.
and also when you change stock reeds to boysen reeds and dont rejet it will be leaner. you usualy need to up jet a little with performance reeds. so what might of happens when you swaped reeds it leaned it out for you as well as made it easyer to start if you truely had a reed problem.
putting in boysen power reeds is a great thing to do very cheap good mod. and it is a safer reed when they break they dont trash the engine like the stock metal ones can.
you can just pull your reeds out and look at them if they are a little hung open then replace them . if only one or two of the reed petals is only open a tinny tinny bit you may never even notice. but if you find metal stock ones in there replace them no mater what.
if you have good fiber glass ones stick them back in.and pop in a smaller jet .
put the needle clip one notch doun from the top or in the middle. and jet down until it runs the strongest then go back up one size. run it around run it wide open then take a look at the plug. post what it looks like.
and only run 32:1 or 40:1 dont be switching around from one to the other. you have to jet for one or the other.
40 has more gas in it so it is richer. 32 has less gas so it is leaner. i know it sound wrong but we are talking about gasoline jeting in your carburetor . not smoke out of youe tail pipe or how much lubrication your engine is getting. jeting is about the gas and air. 32:1 has more oil and les gas and is a little thicker even.
oil mixturs afect jeting allot. and belive it or not 40:1 is richer.
what size carb ? what size main jet? what clip position?
