I broke a CV joint and have the machine apart to the point that the remains of the front axle is hanging from the front differential. How do I remove this? If I give it a good jerk will it come out? Thanks

 

thats how you do it. sometimes you need to pry on it gently as well.

Soak it for a day or two with penatrating oil and then give it one more day.

 

if it is an older 500 you have a pin in the spline on the front differential.you need a rool pin punch to remove these.

 

A good yank or pry will remove it - it isn't pretty or fun . The housing is machined at an an angle on the inside to compress the clip - you'll see when you get it apart . There is no roll pin in that area to drive out .

if it is a newer sportsman than you are right,if its an older sportsman it does have a role pin in the yoke on the differential splines!

 

ive never seen a roll pin on the axle except on the universle ends of the older ones.

 

its on my 01. it is about 5/16 or a 1/4 inch roll pin. its a b!tch to drive out but once you do the axle pulls right out

 

you can buy a set of roll pin punches at sears for $20. i am assuming that he wants to remove the whole axle and no just the cv joint.
