Can stock 400ex shocks be adjusted to different presets? I would like to have a little more travel, in turn, making it a little bit softer on the landing. Let me know how easy and what any setting (if any) you would recommend. Thanks.

There is a collar that compresses the spring. That collar has 5 notches. You can turn it, so you release preload of the spring. It won't give you any more travel, but will let it travel a little easier. I think the factory sets them on #4 and alot run them on #2.

Do you have to take the entire shock off or can you do it while still on? I assume that you want to turn it back to the left to get to position 2? Thanks!

You can leave the shock mounted. I am not sure which way to spin it, but if you look at the collar at the bottom of the spring, you will see it. I use a big set of channel locks to twist it. They sell a tool but the channel locks work.

Start from scratch and set your shocks up properly! Besides preload (ride height), you also have compression and rebound damping adjustments..........

can you mount 450r or 400ex rear shocks on a 300ex? I have heard they are much better. I ride mostly trails and some are rough

I was under the impression he meant the fronts only, The rear does have 3 adjustments. I would think the front is the problem, though, because the rear shock is pretty good on the 400ex.
