Default New chain or remove a link?

My 200m atc's chain has become very loose. i was wondering if it would be good to remove a link or two from the chain to take off some slack from the chain, or just buy a new chain. I think the chain got strectched because the chain is on tight as it can possibly be and is still very loose.

Any suggestions on what i should do. or around how much a new chain would cost.. Thank you.

If it is so worn, youcan't tighten it, you should replace it. It is probably going to fail soon and that can be expensive.
You should be able to find a cheap chain for 35 or 40 dollars.

Thanks for the reply.

I think the chain got stretched, becuase it was tightened a few months ago, and became very slack, and now it cannot be tigghtened, also i was wondering if i got a new chain, should i get a new front sprocket to, because it is wore down also. People told me that the chain will probally get stretched agian if dont get a new sprocket.

If your not drag racing or anything like that I would take a link out. It's not a good idea to run a new chain on an old sprocket anyway. So just take a link out and grind them into the dirt. A #50 chain can handle quite a bit of torque; even worn out. After they are totally worn out replace the whole set at once.
I would not do this on a shifter big bore or anything with a lot of torque put to it. You can break the chain and that would ruin your whole day. Not to mention the case.

One link should work. It's deceiving.

Chains and sprockets (both front and rear) are disposable items that should be changed out now and then anyway! Freshen the machine up with new ones, and save yourself a long walk home sometime.........

A chain that won't stay tight is also a symptom of worn out bearings, so don't overlook that possibility.

What bearings???? The rear axle bearings............

One way to check them out might be to take the chain off the rear sprocket, and turn the axle by hand. Is there any resistance or noise, or does it turn freely. Is there any wobble in the axle if you shake it from side to side, etc.

Axle bearings are disposable items as well, and need to be replaced now and then too. I neglected mine on the 400EX, and ended up ruining the bearing carrier, and it cost me $$$$$ to replace.

A buddy of mine has a vintage 250R. He finally replaced his neglected bearings, and gained a fair bit of speed because of decreased resistance.
